The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has taken another major step towards supporting small businesses in Nigeria’s digital economy through a new partnership with TikTok.

The collaboration was announced during the launch of the Digital Commerce Lab for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) held in Lagos, a programme designed to equip entrepreneurs with practical digital skills that can help them grow their businesses online.

NITDA and TikTok Join Forces to Support SMEs

As more businesses move online, digital platforms have become important tools for reaching customers, increasing sales, and expanding into new markets. Recognising this opportunity, NITDA and TikTok are working together to ensure that Nigerian entrepreneurs are not left behind.

Representing the Director-General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa CCIE, the Director of Stakeholder Management and Partnerships, Dr. Aristotle Onumo, highlighted the importance of digital transformation for businesses.

According to him, the future of commerce is rapidly becoming digital, making it necessary for SMEs to embrace technology and online platforms.

“The future of commerce is digital. SMEs must leverage platforms to access new markets, increase productivity, and drive growth,” Dr. Onumo stated.

Digital Commerce Lab to Provide Practical Training

The newly launched Digital Commerce Lab aims to help entrepreneurs understand how to use digital tools effectively to market products, engage customers, and improve business performance.

The programme will focus on providing practical knowledge that business owners can immediately apply to their daily operations. Participants will gain exposure to modern digital commerce strategies, online marketing techniques, and other skills needed to compete in today’s technology-driven marketplace.

For many small businesses, especially those operating in rural areas, access to digital knowledge remains a major challenge. The initiative seeks to bridge that gap and create more opportunities for entrepreneurs across the country.

New NITDA-TikTok Partnership to Reach More Businesses

One of the major highlights of the event was the announcement of a strategic partnership between NITDA and TikTok.

Under the partnership, both organisations will work together to expand digital commerce training to SMEs across Nigeria, with special attention given to entrepreneurs in remote and underserved communities.

The goal is to ensure that business owners, regardless of their location, have access to the digital skills needed to participate in the growing online economy.

$20,000 Pilot Programme for SME Training

As part of the collaboration, NITDA and TikTok will launch a $20,000 pilot “Train-the-Trainer” programme.

Through NITDA’s Digital Literacy for All (DL4ALL) network, selected trainers will receive specialised digital commerce training. These trainers will, in turn, transfer their knowledge to SMEs across different parts of the country.

The programme will also provide training materials and facilitator guides to support learning and ensure that participants gain practical, useful skills.

By adopting the train-the-trainer model, the initiative is expected to reach a larger number of entrepreneurs and create a wider impact nationwide.

Why This Matters for Nigerian Entrepreneurs

Many small businesses struggle with limited visibility, low customer reach, and inadequate knowledge of digital tools. Programmes like the Digital Commerce Lab can help address these challenges by teaching entrepreneurs how to use online platforms to grow their businesses.

With more consumers shopping and interacting online, digital skills are becoming essential for business success. Entrepreneurs who understand digital marketing, social commerce, content creation, and customer engagement are better positioned to compete in both local and international markets.

The partnership between NITDA and TikTok is expected to open new opportunities for thousands of Nigerian SMEs seeking to scale their operations and increase revenue through digital channels.

Building a Digitally Inclusive Economy

NITDA noted that the partnership aligns with its broader goal of promoting digital inclusion and ensuring that every Nigerian has the opportunity to benefit from the digital economy.

By providing training and support to SMEs nationwide, the initiative aims to create a more inclusive business environment where entrepreneurs can access the knowledge and tools needed to succeed.

As Nigeria continues its digital transformation journey, collaborations such as this are expected to play a key role in empowering businesses, creating jobs, and driving economic growth.
