Truck, bus collision kills driver on Lagos-Ibadan expressway

Scene of an accident

A tragic incident occurred on Wednesday along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway when a driver lost his life after his white Mazda bus collided with a moving truck near Car Park C in the Lotto area. The driver, who was the sole occupant of the bus loaded with bags of potatoes, was reportedly en route to Lagos at the time of the accident. Eyewitnesses suggest that he may have dozed off while driving, causing him to lose control and crash into the truck from behind.

Babatunde Akinbiyi, the Public Relations Officer for the Ogun State Traffic Enforcement and Compliance Agency, confirmed the details of the incident in a statement to reporters, attributing the accident to excessive speed and possible fatigue.

Akinbiyi stated, “Witnesses reported that the driver was speeding and likely fell asleep at the wheel. The Mazda bus, fully loaded with potatoes destined for early morning delivery in Lagos, lost control and struck a moving Dangote truck from the rear. Tragically, he died at the scene after becoming trapped in the wreckage before emergency services could extricate him.”

While extending condolences to the victim’s family, Akinbiyi urged drivers to be vigilant, especially during nighttime travel, highlighting the risks associated with speeding and fatigue. “We once again advise motorists to avoid driving at night and refrain from excessive speeding, as these factors significantly contribute to preventable road accidents,” he emphasized.

This unfortunate crash underscores the urgent need for heightened awareness and stricter enforcement of road safety measures, particularly on heavily trafficked routes like the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
