Wife Collapses in Ilorin Court After Husband Insists on Divorce Despite Her Pleas

There was high drama at the Area Court in Igboro, Ilorin, Kwara State, on Wednesday, when a woman identified as Mulikat Yusuf fainted moments after her husband, Ishaq Abdulganiyu, firmly rejected her plea for reconciliation and insisted on ending their marriage.

The emotional incident occurred during a court session presided over by Judge Toyin Aluko, where Abdulganiyu, appearing calm and resolute, told the court that he was no longer interested in continuing the union. He stated that their relationship had become unbearable and beyond repair despite multiple attempts to resolve their issues.

“I’m tired, My Lord,” Abdulganiyu said. “I just want peace of mind. We’ve tried to fix things, but it’s not working.”

Mulikat, visibly distraught, broke down in tears and begged the court to intervene. She pleaded passionately, saying she had nowhere to go and that she still wanted to remain with her husband after raising six children together. “Please, My Lord, help me talk to him,” she cried. “I don’t want this marriage to end.”

However, her appeals failed to move Abdulganiyu, who maintained his position and insisted that the divorce must proceed. After the hearing, as the couple stepped out of the courtroom, Mulikat reportedly collapsed near the court entrance, sending panic through the crowd gathered outside.

Eyewitnesses said court staff and sympathisers rushed to assist her, splashing water on her face until she regained consciousness. She was later helped to a nearby bench to rest as proceedings continued inside.

Judge Aluko, addressing the situation, advised both parties to consider peaceful reconciliation and explore ways to settle their differences amicably, especially for the sake of their children.

The court subsequently adjourned the case to December 10, 2025, for a report on possible reconciliation or continuation of the divorce proceedings.

The incident has since stirred conversations online, with some sympathising with the woman and others defending the man’s right to walk away from what he described as a toxic marriage. Many commenters reflected on the challenges of long-term marriages in Nigeria, emphasizing that emotional peace should be valued as much as marital endurance.
