Dino Melaye Says Peter Obi “Not Yet Ready” For Presidency Ahead Of 2027 Election

Former senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye, has said that although Peter Obi is a respected and admirable Nigerian, he does not believe the former Anambra State governor is ready to become president of Nigeria.

Melaye made the remarks during an interview on Channels Television, where he discussed the political permutations ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

“Obi Is A Fantastic Nigerian”

During the interview, Melaye offered praise for Obi’s personality and reputation but insisted that the presidency requires a different level of political capacity.

According to him, Obi remains a respected figure in Nigerian politics but currently lacks what it takes to lead a complex and diverse country like Nigeria.

Melaye said:

“Let me tell you, Peter Obi is a fantastic Nigerian. I have tremendous respect for him, and I’ve said it before. He is a fantastic person, but this is not his time to be president.”

His comments have sparked debate among supporters and critics of Obi, particularly as conversations about the 2027 elections continue to intensify across Nigeria’s political landscape.

Concerns About National Unity

Melaye also suggested that one of the major challenges facing Obi is the ability to build a broad coalition across Nigeria’s ethnic, regional, and political divides.

According to the former senator, a presidential candidate must possess strong political structures and alliances capable of uniting various parts of the country.

He argued that leadership at the national level requires more than popularity or personal credibility, stressing that political reach and national cohesion are essential for governance in a country as diverse as Nigeria.

Obi’s Growing Political Influence

Despite Melaye’s remarks, Obi remains one of the most influential figures in Nigeria’s opposition politics.

The former governor of Anambra State gained significant national attention during the 2023 presidential election, where he ran under the Labour Party (Nigeria) and built a strong support base, particularly among young voters and urban populations.

His campaign movement, widely known as the “Obidient” movement, transformed Nigeria’s political conversation and demonstrated the potential power of grassroots mobilization.

Political observers note that Obi’s popularity has remained strong since the last election, and he has repeatedly indicated his intention to contest again in 2027.

Political Rivalries And Alignments

Melaye’s comments have also been interpreted by some analysts as reflecting the complex alliances and rivalries currently forming within Nigeria’s opposition parties.

The former senator has long been associated with Atiku Abubakar, the former vice president who has also contested several presidential elections and is expected to remain a key figure in opposition politics.

Speculation continues over whether multiple opposition leaders will seek the presidency in 2027 or attempt to form a coalition capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Mixed Reactions From Nigerians

Melaye’s remarks quickly generated reactions on social media and political forums, with opinions sharply divided.

Supporters of Obi argued that his record as governor of Anambra State and his performance in the 2023 election demonstrate that he possesses the competence required to lead the country.

Others, however, agreed with Melaye’s position, suggesting that Obi still needs stronger national alliances and political structures before seeking the presidency again.

Looking Ahead To 2027

As Nigeria moves closer to another election cycle, political discussions about potential candidates are expected to intensify.

While Obi remains a major figure in opposition politics, the contest for leadership within opposition parties may shape the eventual lineup of presidential candidates.

For now, Melaye’s remarks highlight the early political maneuvering and debates that will likely define the road to the 2027 presidential election in Nigeria.
