African Democratic Congress Announces Timetable for 2026 Nationwide Congresses and National Convention

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has officially released the timetable for its 2026 nationwide congresses and national convention, outlining the schedule for renewing the party’s leadership structures across the country.

In a statement issued by the party, the ADC explained that the exercise is part of its constitutional obligation to periodically reorganise and elect new leadership at various levels of the party structure.

According to the party leadership, the congress process will begin at the grassroots and progress through successive levels of the party hierarchy before culminating in the national convention.

Grassroots to National Level

The congresses will start from polling units and wards, then move to local government areas, followed by state congresses, before the final gathering at the national convention.

Party officials said the process is intended to deepen internal democracy, encourage wider participation among members, and reposition the party ahead of future political engagements.

Approved Timetable

The schedule released by the party leadership outlines the following dates for the exercise:

  • Polling Unit and Ward Congresses: Tuesday, 7 April 2026

  • Local Government Area Congresses: Thursday, 9 April 2026

  • State Congresses: Saturday, 11 April 2026

  • National Convention: Tuesday, 14 April 2026

The national convention will serve as the culmination of the process, where delegates from across the country will gather to elect or ratify national party leadership.

Strengthening Internal Democracy

Party officials noted that the congresses are essential to maintaining transparent and democratic governance within the organisation. They said regular leadership renewal ensures accountability while giving party members the opportunity to participate in decision-making processes.

The ADC also urged its members nationwide to actively participate in the congresses to guarantee a peaceful, transparent, and credible exercise.

Preparing for Future Political Activities

Political observers believe the congress timetable signals the party’s effort to reorganise early ahead of upcoming electoral cycles in Nigeria.

Although the ADC remains a smaller player compared to dominant parties like the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the party has continued to position itself as part of the broader opposition landscape.

With the congress process now scheduled, the party will focus on consolidating its internal structures nationwide as it prepares for future political contests.

The ADC leadership concluded by encouraging members and stakeholders to cooperate fully with party officials to ensure the congresses and the national convention proceed smoothly and successfully.
