Alarm Raised Over Alleged Plot to Arrest Atiku, Amaechi and Other Opposition Leaders

A public affairs analyst and social activist, Adekunle Adebayo, has stirred fresh political controversy after alleging that there is a coordinated plot to arrest and intimidate prominent opposition figures in Nigeria, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi. The allegation, which has sparked intense debate across political circles and social media platforms, raises broader concerns about the state of democracy, rule of law, and political tolerance in the country.

Adebayo made the claims in a statement issued on Tuesday and made available to the media. According to him, the alleged plan is not an isolated action but part of a wider strategy aimed at weakening opposition politics and gradually pushing Nigeria toward what he described as a de facto one-party system. He warned that such actions, if carried out, could have far-reaching consequences for democratic stability and civil liberties.

In his statement, Adebayo specifically named Atiku Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai as key opposition figures who have allegedly been marked for arrest. He further claimed that other notable political actors, including former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy Isa Ali Pantami, former Minister of Interior Rauf Aregbesola, Kashim Ibrahim Imam, and several others, are also being targeted in what he described as a widening dragnet against dissenting voices.

Adebayo linked the alleged plan to what he termed a disturbing pattern of arrests and detentions involving high-profile political figures in recent times. He cited the cases of former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal, former Anambra State Governor Chris Ngige, and former Attorney General of the Federation Abubakar Malami as examples of actions that, in his view, suggest an increasing use of state power to pressure or silence political opponents.

According to Adebayo, any move to arrest opposition figures without transparent, due legal process would amount to a serious breach of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution (as amended). He warned that such actions would threaten fundamental rights guaranteed by the constitution, including personal liberty, freedom of association, freedom of expression, equality before the law, and the independence of the judiciary.

“Selective application of law enforcement based on political affiliation is incompatible with constitutional democracy,” Adebayo stated. He argued that while no individual should be considered above the law, the law itself must be applied fairly, transparently, and without political bias. In his view, the perception or reality of selective justice erodes public trust in state institutions and undermines the legitimacy of democratic governance.

He further cautioned that Nigeria risks sliding into a situation where democratic institutions exist only in name, while real political power is enforced through intimidation, coercion, and selective prosecution. Such a trajectory, he warned, could deepen political polarization, fuel public anger, and potentially destabilize the country at a time when it is already grappling with economic and security challenges.

In response to these concerns, Adebayo called on Nigerians, civil society organisations, human rights groups, and the international community to closely monitor unfolding political developments. He stressed the importance of vigilance and civic engagement to ensure that democratic norms are protected and that the rule of law is not weaponised against political opponents.

The allegations have generated mixed reactions among Nigerians. While some commentators described the claims as alarming and urged restraint from the government, others dismissed them as speculative or politically motivated. Supporters of the government argue that no one should be immune from investigation or prosecution if credible allegations exist, regardless of political status. Critics, however, insist that any such actions must be clearly grounded in law and free from political calculations.
