Bandits Strike Wawa Community in Niger State, Kill Four Residents and Set Homes Ablaze
Renewed violence has once again shaken Wawa community in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, as armed bandits launched a deadly attack that left at least four residents dead, several houses destroyed, and many families displaced. The latest incident underscores the growing insecurity confronting rural communities in the state, particularly those located near forested and mining areas that have increasingly become hotspots for criminal activity.
According to reports, the attack occurred on Friday evening and specifically targeted Damala village, which lies behind the Woko–Daba mining corridor. Local sources revealed that the assailants struck between 8:00pm and 8:30pm, taking residents by surprise at a time when many had settled in for the night. By the time villagers attempted to react or flee, the attackers had already unleashed violence on the community.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that four people were killed during the raid, while all livestock belonging to villagers were forcefully taken away. The bandits were said to have herded the stolen animals into the surrounding forests, a tactic that has become common in such attacks and further cripples the economic survival of affected communities, most of which depend heavily on farming and animal husbandry.
A resident who narrowly escaped the attack described the ordeal as terrifying and chaotic. According to the survivor, the bandits arrived suddenly and operated with speed and brutality. “Before anyone could understand what was happening, people were already dead, houses were burning, and our animals were gone,” the resident recounted. The sense of shock and helplessness, locals say, was worsened by the absence of security personnel at the time of the attack.
In addition to the loss of lives and livestock, the attackers reportedly set ablaze a church and several residential buildings, resulting in extensive property damage. Many families were forced to flee their homes in the middle of the night, seeking refuge in neighboring villages and safer locations. For a community already grappling with economic hardship, the destruction of homes and places of worship represents a devastating blow.
Residents of Wawa say fear has now become a constant companion, as repeated attacks have eroded any sense of safety. Another villager lamented that daily activities such as farming, trading, and attending religious services have become increasingly dangerous. “We are living in fear because these attacks keep happening, and there is no visible security to protect us,” the resident said. “People are afraid to go to their farms or even gather to worship.”
Community leaders and concerned residents have renewed calls for urgent intervention by both the Niger State Government and the Federal Government. They are demanding the immediate deployment of adequate security forces to Borgu Local Government Area and its surrounding communities, which they say are dangerously exposed to criminal elements. According to them, the attackers exploit the vast forests and difficult terrain, as well as the limited security presence, to launch raids and retreat without resistance.
Speaking on behalf of the community, Comrade Zakari Y. Adamu appealed to authorities to act swiftly before the situation deteriorates further. He warned that continued inaction would only embolden the attackers and lead to more bloodshed. “We are pleading with the authorities to come to our aid,” he said. “If nothing is done, these attacks will continue, and more innocent lives will be lost. Our people need security now to protect their families, farms, and property.”
Security analysts familiar with the region note that rural communities in Niger State, particularly those close to forests, wildlife reserves, and mining zones, have increasingly become targets for bandit groups. These areas, they argue, are often poorly secured, making them attractive hideouts and operational bases for armed groups. Without sustained security operations and intelligence-driven interventions, experts warn that more communities could face similar attacks.
The latest assault on Wawa has intensified public frustration and anger, with many Nigerians questioning the effectiveness of current security strategies. For residents of Borgu Local Government Area, the hope is that this tragic incident will finally prompt decisive action. Until then, fear, uncertainty, and grief continue to define daily life in a community that was once known for its peace and stability.
