Early Life & Education
Born in Green Bay, Wisconsin, in the United States on June 16, 1957, Wanda Elizabeth “Beth” Moore experienced her childhood in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, where her parents owned and managed a cinema house. Moore and her four siblings grew up with their parents and all had to help out at the cinema from a young.
Moore, who was brought up in the Southern Baptist Church and had to attend regularly, found the church to be a safe place when she was growing up. She claims it was the only place she could go to, to escape the sexual abuse she faced at home.
While she has never mentioned anything relating to her elementary and secondary education, Moore is known to be a very educated and enlightened woman. She graduated from Southwest Texas State University and holds a degree in political science.
Professional Life: Ministry & Authorship

Beth Moore was only 18 years of age when she dedicated her life to vocational Christian ministry. When she was serving as a volunteer Sunday school teacher, Moore realized that there was a need for her to learn more about the Bible and her Christian faith. She enrolled in a biblical doctrine class that instilled in her a deep hunger to know the Bible, and she started to share her expanding knowledge through a Bible study class that was conducted weekly. By the mid-1990s that bible class had grown to over two thousand, and she was speaking at various churches throughout South Texas.
Although still without a proper theological education degree, the publishing arm of LifeWay Christian Resources’, Broadman & Holman (later B&H) started publishing Moore’s Bible studies in 1994, leading to a countrywide speaking ministry for Moore. With the assistance of a worship band she put together, she began conducting weekend conferences around the United States. As a base for her speaking ministry, she established Living Proof Ministries.
In 2008, Beth Moore held a broadcast of her “Living Proof Live” that was reportedly watched by 70,000 people at 715 locations. The publishing and sales of her book about Esther as credited as part of what made a solid quarter for Lifeway Christian Stores at the height of the Great Recession.
Moore supported the Southern Baptist Convention’s theology which teaches that men and women have complementary roles and does not permit women to be pastors. When male church leaders criticized Moore for speaking on Sundays repeatedly, she confirmed that she was not aiming to become a pastor.
When she repeatedly opposed former US President Donald Trump, Moore met deep conflict within the Southern Baptist Convention. She felt increasingly unwelcome in the denomination and decided it was probably best for her to pack her bags. In March 2021, she announced that she was not to be acknowledged as a Southern Baptist any longer, though still a Baptist. She also ended her publishing affiliation with LifeWay Christian.
