Bodija Explosion Funds Controversy: Makinde’s Aide Confirms ₦30bn Release, Says Remaining ₦20bn Withheld Amid Political Tensions

Fresh controversy has erupted over the financial support extended to Oyo State following the devastating Bodija explosion of January 2024, after the state government confirmed that only ₦30 billion of the ₦50 billion requested from the Federal Government was released, with the remaining ₦20 billion allegedly withheld. The clarification, issued by Governor Seyi Makinde’s media aide, has intensified political debates, public scrutiny, and accusations from rival camps.

The Bodija explosion, which occurred in Ibadan in January 2024, left scores of residents dead, destroyed properties, and displaced families, sending shockwaves across the country. In the aftermath of the tragedy, the Oyo State Government sought federal intervention to cushion the humanitarian and infrastructural impact of the disaster. According to the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Makinde, Dr. Sulaimon Olanrewaju, the state formally requested ₦50 billion from the Federal Government after the governor personally visited Abuja with a detailed report of the incident.

Reacting to claims by former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, that the full ₦50 billion had been released and allegedly concealed by the Oyo State Government, Olanrewaju dismissed the allegation as misleading. He explained that while a ₦50 billion support package was discussed and promised, only ₦30 billion was eventually released by the Federal Government. The balance of ₦20 billion, he said, was not accessed due to what he described as demands for inducement tied to the disbursement—an offer the governor reportedly rejected.

According to the governor’s aide, “A promise is not the same as a release. What exists on record is a request and a promise, not a disbursement of ₦50 billion.” He stressed that claims suggesting Governor Makinde received the full amount lack evidence, noting that even the documents circulated by Fayose allegedly show what was not disbursed rather than proof of payment.

The aide further clarified that the ₦30 billion received was not hidden from the public. He stated that Governor Makinde acknowledged the Federal Government’s support during the inauguration of a transparent committee established to manage the relief funds. Of the amount released, ₦4.5 billion—about 15 percent—was reportedly paid directly to victims, including landlords and tenants affected by the explosion. The remaining funds, according to the state government, were allocated to reconstruction, road repairs, restoration of damaged infrastructure, improved security architecture, and plans for a memorial at the explosion site.

Despite these explanations, critics have continued to raise questions about transparency and accountability. Some argue that the direct compensation to victims was too small compared to the total amount released, while others question why the federal intervention was not more publicly communicated at the time. On social media and online forums, reactions have ranged from outright condemnation of Governor Makinde to defenses portraying him as a victim of political blackmail.

The controversy has also taken on a wider political dimension. Olanrewaju linked the renewed attacks on Makinde to his recent declaration that he would not support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, despite having supported him in 2023. According to the aide, Makinde’s stance and his criticism of what he described as moves toward a one-party state have made him a target of coordinated political hostility.

Supporters of the governor argue that the narrative is being deliberately distorted to undermine his credibility and weaken the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State. They point to alleged attempts by political rivals to impose a caretaker committee on the state PDP as evidence of this pressure. Critics, however, insist that the governor owes the public a more detailed breakdown of how the ₦30 billion was spent.

As the debate continues, the Bodija explosion funding controversy has moved beyond questions of disaster relief into a broader discussion about governance, transparency, federal–state relations, and the use of humanitarian interventions as political tools. For many Nigerians, the central issue remains clear: victims of the tragedy deserve justice, clarity, and assurance that all funds meant for their relief were properly and compassionately used. Whether further investigations or official disclosures will put the matter to rest remains to be seen.
