When he was eleven, Hughes’s father took him to his first horse race at Santa Anita Park. In 1951, he completed his studies at Mark Keppel High School and was then awarded a scholarship to attend the University of Southern California, from which he graduated in 1957.

Professional Life: Business Career

After graduating from college, Hughes started the professional phase of his life by doing various jobs in the Los Angeles real estate industry until the early 1970s.

In 1972, he established his company Public Storage, initially operating his business out of a single location in El Cajon, California. The company soon expanded to respectable sites and later had offices around the country.

Hughes was the president and co-chief executive officer of his company from 1980 to November 1991 when he became the sole chief executive officer and chairman of the company.

He stepped down from the chief executive officer position in November 2002 and remained chairman.

His relationship with Public Storage Properties XI, Inc, (later renamed PS Business Parks, Inc) was also detailed as he served as the group’s chief executive officer and chairman from 1990 to March 1998.

Hughes and Patricia Whitcraft were married for many years until his death. Together, they had three children: Parker Hughes, Tamara Gustavson, and Bradley Wayne Hughes Jr.  Parker died in 1998 as an 8-year- old after suffering from childhood leukemia.

Known for his humanitarian side, Mr. Hughes created and financed the Parker Hughes Cancer Center in Minnesota. This organization undertakes research to develop treatments and drugs for children’s leukemia and cancer.
