He was born Bruce Thomas Halle in Springfield, Massachusetts on the 27th day of May 1930. He was raised as one of the seven children of Frederick Joseph Halle Sr. and his wife, Marry Elizabeth McKelvey, who were both devout Catholics.
In 1950, Bruce went to join the United States Marine Corps and served a tour of duty during the Korean War. Afterward, he settled in Michigan and studied at Eastern Michigan University, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in 1956.

After graduating from Eastern Michigan University, Bruce took a series of jobs selling life insurance and cars. He later moved to form a partnership with his high school classmate, Bill DiDonato, on an automobile supply distribution company in Michigan and by late 1959, the establishment went bankrupt.
The following year, he took a loan of $400 and put together a tire store in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Four years later, he opened another store in a decent location, and by 1970, he had seven stores scattered around Michigan. He also expanded to Arizona that same year.
His tire business later became known as Discount Tire, and by 2018, it had grown to more than 1000 stores in 28 states in the United States.
His successful business adventures brought him fame and fortunes, as he turned into a deserving billionaire who registered his name as the richest man living in Arizona, the 87th richest person in the United States, and the 248th richest person in the world as of 2014.
