The American billionaire industrialist, Dennis Washington, who owns or co-owns business interests in a large conglomerate of companies known as the Washington Companies and, in Canada, another consortium of companies known as the Seaspan Marine Corporation, was born in Spokane, Washington, United States in 1934, but he moved to his mother’s hometown of Missoula, Montana, with his family when he was very young.
His parents moved again to Bremerton when the Second World War broke out, and his father started working at a defense shipyard. Following the war, his parents divorced and he was left with no choice but to bounce around Montana, California, and Washington, living with relatives and shuffling between schools.
By the age of 14, he was already earning an income by working as a service station mechanic, shining shoes, boxing groceries, and delivering newspapers.
After graduating from high school, Dennis went to Alaska to work at a construction company, returning to Montana after two years to join his uncle’s construction company. By age 26, Mr. Dennis Montana was vice president of the leading construction company in Montana.
When he was 29, he took a loan from a Caterpillar dealer and went into business for himself. His life changed fast from there and by 1969 when he was 35 years old, he was the largest contractor in Montana, and his company, Washington Construction, became one of the largest in the United States within a period of 10 years. More details follow below.
