In the family, Doug Gottlieb has two older siblings, including a sister named Wendy, and a brother named Gregg who worked as an Oregon State assistant coach. Before his birth, the Gottlieb family had relocated to several places such as Kansas, Wisconsin, Milwaukee, Omaha, Nebraska, and Manhattan before finally settling in Orange, California.

His father, Bob, was diagnosed with cancer in 2011, and sadly passed away due to complications from Melanoma in November 2014.

After signing a letter of intent with Notre Dame, Doug became their starting point guard for the 1995–96 college basketball season. He started all but the first four games that season and led his team with 154 assists and also on steals and minutes played
