DSS Arrests Suspect Over Alleged Attack on Peter Obi in Edo
The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested a suspect linked to the alleged armed attack on former presidential candidate Peter Obi during a political gathering in Benin City.
The incident reportedly occurred on February 24 during a meeting attended by Obi and other political stakeholders. Gunshots were said to have been fired at the venue, causing panic among attendees. Obi and other prominent figures present at the event were not harmed.
Among those reportedly at the meeting was former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, John Oyegun, along with members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Online Threats Trigger Investigation
Security sources revealed that shortly after news of the attack emerged, a social media user identified as Udeme Monday Stephen allegedly posted on X (formerly Twitter), claiming responsibility for the shooting. In the posts, the suspect reportedly boasted that Obi was fortunate to have survived the incident and threatened further attacks should the former Anambra State governor visit Rivers State.
The threatening messages drew widespread attention and triggered an immediate covert investigation by the DSS. According to a top security source, operatives deployed forensic digital tools to trace the origin of the posts and identify the individual behind the account.
The suspect, described as a 26-year-old teacher at Jessica High School in Eliozu, located in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, was subsequently apprehended. Security officials say he is currently in custody and assisting with investigations.
DSS: Investigation Based on Credible Intelligence
A security source familiar with the development explained that the DSS acted swiftly because the threats constituted credible intelligence. The agency, which is responsible for counter-espionage, VIP protection, and internal security operations, reportedly moved once digital evidence linked the suspect to the statements.
“The DSS is always alive to its responsibility of investigating credible threats, irrespective of tribe, religion, or political affiliation,” the source stated, adding that the suspect would be formally charged in court after investigations are concluded.
Authorities have not yet disclosed whether the suspect acted alone or if further arrests are expected.
Public Reactions and Controversy
News of the arrest has sparked intense debate across social media platforms and online forums. While some commentators praised the DSS for acting promptly against violent threats, others questioned whether the arrest fully addresses the circumstances surrounding the attack.
Some observers argue that reckless online statements, particularly those involving threats to public figures, should be treated with seriousness under the law. Others, however, have called for transparency in the investigation to ensure that the actual perpetrators—if different from the suspect arrested—are brought to justice.
Political tensions remain heightened ahead of future elections, with supporters and critics of various parties engaging in heated exchanges online. Security experts have warned that inflammatory rhetoric and threats, whether real or exaggerated, can escalate into broader instability if not properly addressed.
Call for Responsible Political Engagement
The incident underscores growing concerns about political violence and the role of social media in amplifying threats. Analysts note that Nigeria’s security agencies face increasing challenges in distinguishing between idle online bravado and genuine security risks.
As investigations continue, many Nigerians are calling for calm, urging political actors and their supporters to exercise restraint in public statements. The DSS has not issued an official detailed statement beyond confirming the arrest, but insiders indicate that the agency remains vigilant regarding threats to high-profile individuals.
With the suspect now in custody and legal proceedings expected to follow, attention will shift to the courts to determine the extent of his involvement and whether additional actors may be implicated.
