Eric Bana is an Award Winning Australian actor and comedian. He began his career in a sketch comedy series “Full Frontal”, before the role in the comedy drama “The Castle” got him noticed. His role in the biographical crime film “Chopper” released in 2000 got him further critical recognition.

Bana got Hollywood’s attention after featuring in the 2001 war film “Black Hawk Down” and 2003 movie “Hulk”. He has since then acted in great movies like “Troy”, “Munich”, “Star Trek” and others.

Early Life & Biography

Eric Bana was born in Melborne, Australia on August 9, 1968. His father was a Croatian named Ivan while his mother, Eleanor was a German. Ivan worked at Caterpillar Inc as a logistics manager while Eleanor was a hairdresser. Eric has an older brother named Anthony.

Bana grew up in Melbourne’s Tullamarine, a suburban area near Melbourne’s international airport and attended Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School.

His acting skills showed at a very young age and he began making impressions of family members at six or seven years. He began mimicking the walk, voice and mannerisms of his grandfather and also his teachers at school.

Bana decided in his teenage years to become an actor after watching Mel Gibson’s film “Mad Max”. He ventured into comedy in 1991 while working as a barman in Melbourne’s Castle hotel. His stand-up comedy gigs however, wasn’t bringing in enough money, so he continued his job as a barman.

Bana’s television debut was on Steve Vizard’s late night talk show, “Tonight Live” in 1993. It got him noticed by the producers of the Sketch comedy series, “Full Frontal” and he was invited on board as a writer and actor. His impressions of celebrities like Sylvester Stallone, Tom Cruise and Arnold Schwarzenegger made him popular with viewers, throughout his time on the show.

As a result of his success and popularity, he recorded a comedy album “Out of Bounds” and also hosted his own show “The Eric Bana Show”. The show written and performed by Bana, failed to attract substantial audience and got cancelled after eight episodes. However, in 1997 he won a Logie Award for “Most Popular Comedy Personality” as a result of his performance on the show.

Bana’s film debut was in “The Castle” an Australian movie which surprisingly became a critical success, earning A$10,326,428 at the box office. He went on to star in “Chopper” which also became a critical success and even got him award for Best Actor from the Australian Film Institute.

Personal Life

Eric Bana and Rebecca Gleeson got married in 1997. They began dating in 1995 and Eric proposed while on a trip to the United States. The couple live in Melbourne and have two children, a son, Klaus and a daughter, Sophia.

Bana loves motor racing and has actively taken part in several motor racing competitions in Australia. He is also a prominent fan of Australian Football with his favorite team being St Kilda Football Club.

Eric is also actively involved in philanthropy. He is an ambassador for “Youths Off the Street” a Father Chris Riley Charity for homeless young people. He also advocates for Mental Illness Fellowship and other philanthropic organizations.
