Erin Isabelle Burnett was born on July 2, 1976, in Mardela Springs, Maryland, United States. She is one of the children of Kenneth King Burnett and Esther Margaret who raised her and her siblings in the same town where she was born. She is of Scottish and Irish ancestry. Her father’s job as a corporate attorney was enough to provide for the family and also take care of the children’s education.
Burnett attended a boarding school in Middletown, Delaware, called St. Andrew’s School. After graduating in 1994, she enrolled at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts to studied political science and economics. She graduated from this institution with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political economy.
While in college, Erin enjoyed sports and participated in lacrosse and field hockey.

Earlier on, after she had graduated from Williams College with her degree in political economy, Erin got hired by Goldman Sachs and she began her career there as a financial analyst, working in their investment banking department. There, she worked on corporate finance and mergers and acquisitions. It was while working as an investment-banking analyst that she received the offer of a position at CNN as a booker and writer for CNN’s Moneyline with Lou Dobbs, Willow Bay, and Stuart Varney. After some time, she left CNN and Citigroup’s digital media group, CitiMedia as its vice president.
Following a brief stint at Citigroup, the political economist joined Bloomberg Television as a Stocks anchor and editor.
