Ex-Abia Speaker Chinedum Orji Emerges as Abia Chairman of Tinubu Campaign Group

The political landscape in Abia State has received a fresh jolt following the unveiling of former Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Engr. Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji, FNSE, as the Abia State Chairman of the City Boy Movement, a political organization mobilizing support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The announcement was made in Umuahia amid party faithful and supporters, marking what leaders of the Movement described as a major strategic step to strengthen grassroots mobilization for President Tinubu’s re-election bid in the South-East. The City Boy Movement, which presents itself as a youth-driven political platform aligned with the President’s “Renewed Hope Agenda,” said Orji’s entry into its leadership structure would significantly boost its influence and organizational reach within Abia State.

Chinedum Orji, popularly known as Ikukuoma Abia, served as Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly from 2019 to 2023 and represented Umuahia Central State Constituency for two terms. During his tenure as Speaker, he was often credited by supporters with maintaining legislative stability and asserting the independence of the Assembly, even amid intense political pressures within the state.

Beyond politics, Orji brings a professional background in engineering to the role. He is a graduate of Civil Engineering from the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), and a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (FNSE). The City Boy Movement highlighted this blend of technical expertise and political experience as a valuable asset in driving structured and effective political mobilization.

In explaining its choice, the Movement cited Orji’s well-known “Direct Touch” Initiative, a program he championed while in office that focused on direct empowerment of youths and women through livelihood support, skills acquisition, and small-scale economic interventions. According to the group, the initiative demonstrated Orji’s capacity for grassroots engagement and people-centered leadership.

The organization also noted Orji’s recent defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing it as a significant political realignment that has helped strengthen the party’s structure in Abia State. His move, they argued, reflects a broader shift among experienced political actors who believe the APC offers a more viable platform for national development and political relevance.

Speaking at the unveiling, Mayor Lucky Igbokwe, popularly known as Don Lulu and Director of the City Boy Movement in Abia State, described Orji’s emergence as a turning point for the Movement in the South-East.

“Today, we have not just added a name to our leadership; we have gained a General,” Igbokwe said. “Rt. Hon. Chinedum Orji is a builder by profession and a builder of men by calling. His acceptance of this responsibility signals a new dawn for the City Boy Movement in Abia and across the South-East. With Ikukuoma on board, the wind of progress is now firmly behind us.”

Igbokwe added that the Movement remains firmly committed to mobilizing citizens in support of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, stressing that Orji’s leadership would deepen political participation, expand outreach at the ward and local government levels, and energize supporters ahead of 2027.

Orji himself has received several recognitions over the years, including the Sun Public Service Award and Champion Newspaper’s Most Outstanding Speaker Award. The City Boy Movement said these honors reflect his record of public service and legislative leadership.

However, his appointment has also sparked intense debate and reactions, particularly on social media and political forums. While supporters see his emergence as a boost to the APC’s chances in Abia State, critics have questioned his political legacy and influence, citing his family’s long-standing role in Abia politics. The development has, unsurprisingly, reignited old political rivalries and sharpened conversations around the state’s future political direction.

Despite the mixed reactions, the City Boy Movement expressed confidence that Orji’s experience and political network would help consolidate its presence in Abia State and contribute meaningfully to President Tinubu’s re-election efforts.

As preparations for the 2027 elections gradually gather momentum, Orji’s unveiling underscores the growing intensity of political alignments and realignments across the country, with Abia State shaping up to be one of the key battlegrounds in the South-East.
