Fresh Bandit Attack Sparks Fear as Five Travellers Are Abducted on Ogbe–Egbe Road, One Shot

Tension and fear have once again gripped Ogbe and neighbouring communities following a renewed bandit attack along the Ogbe–Egbe road, a rural route that has increasingly become synonymous with insecurity. The incident, which occurred on Friday, has left one person injured and five others abducted, further heightening concerns about the safety of travellers in the area.

According to reports, the victims were part of a group of residents travelling from Ogbe to Egbe to attend a wedding ceremony. The event was meant to be a moment of joy and celebration, as the wedding involved an indigene of Ogbe residing in Egbe. However, what should have been a peaceful journey quickly turned into a traumatic ordeal when armed assailants ambushed the travellers along the way.

The attack reportedly took place at the boundary area between Ogbe and Koro, a stretch of road locals say has become increasingly dangerous due to repeated criminal activities. Eyewitness accounts indicate that the assailants emerged suddenly from nearby bushes, firing shots to force the travellers to stop. In the chaos that followed, one individual was shot by the attackers.

The injured victim was immediately rushed to a hospital for urgent medical attention. As of the time of reporting, details about the person’s condition and the hospital where treatment is being administered remain undisclosed. Community members, however, have expressed deep concern about the victim’s health and are calling for prayers and support.

More distressing is the abduction of five other travellers, who were forcefully taken away by the bandits and marched into the surrounding bush. Their whereabouts remain unknown, and families of the abducted individuals are said to be in a state of anguish, desperately awaiting news while fearing possible ransom demands.

The latest incident has reignited outrage and anxiety among residents of Ogbe, Egbe, Koro, and surrounding settlements. Many locals say attacks along rural roads have become alarmingly frequent, turning what should be short and routine journeys into life-threatening risks. Farmers, traders, students, and families travelling for social events are now forced to move with fear, often reconsidering travel plans entirely.

Residents have accused the authorities of failing to provide adequate security along these vulnerable routes. According to community leaders, patrols by security agencies are either irregular or completely absent, giving criminal elements the confidence to operate freely. Some locals claim that bandits now study travel patterns and strike at times when they expect minimal resistance.

“This road has become a death trap,” a resident lamented. “People are no longer safe travelling for weddings, funerals, or even to their farms. How long will this continue?”

Calls are now growing louder for the government and security agencies to urgently intervene. Residents are demanding increased patrols, the establishment of security checkpoints along the Ogbe–Egbe axis, and intelligence-driven operations to dismantle criminal hideouts in the surrounding forests. Some community members have also called for collaboration between local vigilantes and formal security forces to improve response time during emergencies.

The attack underscores the broader challenge of insecurity facing many rural communities across Nigeria, where banditry, kidnapping, and armed robbery have disrupted daily life and eroded public confidence. Despite repeated assurances from authorities, many citizens feel that criminal groups continue to operate with impunity, especially in less-policed areas.

As families of the abducted travellers wait anxiously, the incident serves as yet another grim reminder of the urgent need for decisive and sustained action to secure rural roads and protect innocent citizens. Until meaningful steps are taken, residents fear that journeys meant for celebration may continue to end in tragedy.
