Gary Lineker Apologizes to Victor Osimhen After Champions League Heroics

Former England striker and football pundit Gary Lineker has publicly apologized to Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen after previously questioning his consistency and mentality on the pitch.
The apology came just days after Osimhen scored the decisive goal in Galatasaray’s 1-0 UEFA Champions League victory over Liverpool at RAMS Park, a performance that earned him the Man of the Match award.
Osimhen, who joined Galatasaray in the summer on a four-year deal, has quickly become a talisman for the Turkish giants, delivering key performances both domestically and in Europe. His strike against the Premier League champions not only secured three crucial points for the club but also silenced many of his critics.
Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, which he co-hosts with Alan Shearer and Micah Richards, Lineker admitted he had misjudged the Nigerian international.
“I need to apologise to Victor Osimhen,” Lineker said. “I remember that I intimated that he goes missing sometimes, and I believe that is completely not the case. So, Victor, if you are listening, I’m sorry about that. You should not spread rumours about these things, so my bad on that.”
The former Barcelona and Tottenham forward, known for his sharp punditry, stressed that Osimhen’s performances had forced him to rethink his earlier stance.
Osimhen’s winning goal against Liverpool has further cemented his reputation as one of Africa’s leading strikers. Since making the move to Turkey, he has been pivotal in Galatasaray’s campaign, combining his pace, strength, and finishing ability to trouble Europe’s top defenders.
The 26-year-old striker will be hoping to continue his fine form this weekend when Galatasaray face rivals Besiktas in the Turkish Super Lig. A victory would not only boost the club’s title chances but also underline Osimhen’s growing influence in Turkish and European football.
Osimhen’s success has also rekindled debates about the treatment of African players in Europe, where they are often judged harshly by pundits and media figures. Lineker’s apology was welcomed by fans who felt Osimhen deserved more respect for his achievements on the pitch.
“Results cancel insults,” one supporter commented, reflecting the general mood among Nigerian fans online.
For Osimhen, the focus now shifts from silencing critics to maintaining consistency, as Galatasaray continue their Champions League journey while also chasing domestic glory.
