Gordon Moore is the co-founder and chairman emeritus of the globally-renowned Intel Corporation and has been a contributory figure in the technology industry and has accomplished many accolades with his incomparable endeavors.

Though not so much is available about his childhood life, we’re aware that this American businessman had physics as a subject and also pursued studies in the discipline of chemistry. He took an immense interest in research work as a college student and later bagged a doctoral degree from the California Institute of Technology.

After working briefly with semiconductors as a member of the group of eight people hired by physicist William Shockley, he decided to part ways with the physicist and joined Sherman Fairchild’s Fairchild Semiconductor venture, and this marked the start of the turning point of his life.

Early Life: Childhood & Education

He was born Gordon Earle Moore on 3 January 1929, in San Francisco, California, United States.

After completing his schooling at Sequoia High School, he enrolled in the San Jose State University, from which he moved to the University of California in Berkeley where he completed his B.Sc. degree in chemistry in 1950.

Moving on from there, he enrolled at the California Institute of Technology and earned his Ph.D. in chemistry with a minor in physics in 1954. He was engaged in postdoctoral research from 1953 to 1956, which he conducted at the John Hopkins University’s Applied Physics Laboratory located in Baltimore.

Professional Life: Entrepreneurial Career

After working with physicist William Shockley at the Shockley Semiconductor Laboratory, Gordon and the rest seven members of the team of talented Ph.D. graduates, termed the ‘Traitorous eight’, received support from the American businessman and inventor Sherman Fairchild.

The eight graduates were engaged in the Fairchild Semiconductor company as soon as it was formed, and Gordon became the director of the research and development department of the company in 1965.

His observation regarding the future of semiconductor components during an interview with the magazine ‘Electronics’ became popularized as ‘Moore’s Law’, and was published in Electronics magazine on 19th April 1965.

In 1968, he worked with business personality Robert Noyce and founded the NM Electronics company, which later went on to become the world-renowned Intel Corporation. Gordon served as the company’s Executive Vice President before he was appointed president in 1975.

From April 1979, this talented scientist occupied the position of Chief Executive Officer of Intel and held the office till 1987. He also worked as the chairman of the Board of Directors of the company and was also a board member of the California Institute of Technology.

From 1991 to 1996, Gordon was engaged with the biotech company Gilead Sciences where he served as a member of the Business Advisory Board. He eventually became a member of the Board of Directors of the company. In 1993, he was voted as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the California Institute of technology. He is a life trustee of the institute presently.

Gordon continued to chair the Board of Directors of Intel Corp. till 1997, and after that, he was appointed the Chairman Emeritus of the corporation.

Mr. Gordon Moore became a member of the National Academy of Engineering in 1976. In 1990, he received the National Medal of Technology and Innovation from President George H. W. Bush.

He became a Fellow of the Computer History Museum in the year 1998 and was honored with an Othmer Gold Medal in 2001 in recognition of his exceptional contributions to the field of chemistry and science.

In 2002, Gordon received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and also a Bower Award which he won for Business Leadership. The next year, he became a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

In 2008, he was recognized with the IEEE Medal of Honor and was awarded a Future Dan David Prize for his remarkable work in the field of telecommunications in the year 2010.

For his involvement in environmental conservation projects, Gordon received the Order of the Golden Ark honor from Prince Bernhard of Lippe-Biesterfeld in the year 2002 for his contributions towards the conservation of the environment.
