He was born Harold Glenn Hamm on December 11, 1945, in Lexington, Oklahoma, United States, as the 13th and youngest child of Leland Albert Hamm and Jane Elizabeth who were both cotton sharecroppers.

In 1967, Harold Hamm founded Shelly Dean Oil Company, which went on to later become Continental Resources. His company pioneered the expansion of the Bakken oil field in Montana and North Dakota using hydraulic fracturing and horizontally drilled wells.
When Continental Resources became a major oil producer, Mr. Hamm became a billionaire. His company is the fourth-largest public company in the state of Oklahoma.
