Harry Smith is a television journalist and news anchor from Illinois. He is currently employed as a senior correspondent for CNBC, MSNBC, and NBC News. Harry hosted the CBS News morning programs, CBS This Morning, and its successor, The Early Show for seventeen years. In July 2011, he left CBS News in a move to serve in the position of a correspondent for NBC News and the now discontinued newsmagazine Rock Center with Brian Williams. He has also served as a presenter for MSNBC, handling daytime live coverage of events and breaking news since making his maiden appearance in November 2015.

He began his career as a broadcaster in Denver, Colorado, working for radio stations KHOW and KIMN, and also at Cincinnati, Ohio, radio station WLW. From 1981 to 1982, he worked for the public television station KRMA-TV in Denver and spent the next three years working as an anchor and reporter for the then-CBS affiliate, KMGH-TV, in Denver (the station is now affiliated with ABC). In 1986, he joined CBS News as a news presenter and was named a correspondent a year later.

For thirteen years, Smith served as a contributor to CBS News documentaries, 48 Hours, and The CBS Evening News with Dan Rather. He spent the majority of his time at CBS anchoring the CBS morning show. From November 1987 to June 1996, he served as a co-host of CBS This Morning. After leaving the show, he was featured on the CBS Evening News in a report called “Travels with Harry,” which examined unique people and places around America.

In the fall of 2015, the anchor began regularly filling in as co-anchor on the weekend edition of NBC’s Today alongside Erica Hill, a former colleague from The Early Show. Smith is also part of a rotating group of co-anchors that have been filling the co-host chair since it was vacated by Lester Holt when he took up the role of weekday anchor of NBC Nightly News.
