“I still live with my family” – Ayra Starr Declares
Afrobeats sensation Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, also known as Ayra Starr, discusses the grounding influence of her family life, despite her growing recognition and success.
In an interview with Coco Jones for Rolling Stone’s Musicians on Musicians series, Ayra revealed that when she returns to Nigeria, she continues to live with her family, enjoying the ordinary joys and occasional mayhem that comes with it.
“When I return home [to Nigeria], I still live with my family.” “My brothers are making noise while playing video games,” she explained.
Ayra also mentioned that she seeks personal style advice from her friends, often reaching out to them via group chat to obtain feedback on her clothing.
She continued, “I still include friends in my life. We have a group chat in which I solicit feedback on what I wear. I thank God for my friends and family. However, it can get overpowering at times, and I need to disappear.”
Recently, Ayra Starr just solidified her place as a global celebrity by reaching 2 billion Spotify streams.
This astounding feat comes only months after the release of her highly anticipated second album, The Year I Turned 21, which has already received over 500 million Spotify streams.
The album, praised for its genre-bending sounds and introspective lyrics, has been a commercial and critical triumph, contributing greatly to her streaming figures.
Starr first gained global notice with her self-titled debut EP in 2019, quickly ascending through the ranks of Nigeria’s music industry.
Since then, her career has included multiple hit songs, international acclaim, and collaborations with global stars.
Among her enormous library, two tracks stand out for their outstanding performance on Spotify.
Rvssian’s Santa, on which Ayra Starr guested, has over 455 million streams, while her chart-topping hit Rush has over 409 million streams.
