IPOB Discontinues Use of “Emma Powerful” Pseudonym, Moves to Fully Institutional Communication Structure

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has formally discontinued the use of the pseudonym “Emma Powerful” in all its official communications, marking a significant shift toward a more centralised and institutional approach to public engagement. The decision, announced by the organisation’s Directorate of State (DOS), is aimed at addressing concerns over credibility, security, and internal control.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Head of the IPOB Directorate of State, Mazi Chukwukadibia Edoziem, confirmed that all official press statements from the organisation must henceforth be released exclusively on IPOB’s official letterheaded paper. According to the leadership, this measure is designed to eliminate confusion, prevent impersonation, and protect the integrity of the movement’s messaging.

For years, “Emma Powerful” functioned as an operational pseudonym used by IPOB’s Publicity Secretary to disseminate statements and articulate the group’s positions. However, the DOS said the name has increasingly been abused, misused, and compromised by unauthorised individuals and groups, creating serious risks for the organisation and the broader Biafran self-determination movement.

The leadership explained that statements issued in the name of IPOB carry significant political, social, and security implications, both locally and internationally. As such, the continued use of a compromised pseudonym was deemed incompatible with globally recognised institutional best practices that IPOB says it is striving to uphold.

“The pseudonym has been deployed in ways that no longer reflect the collective decisions or intentions of IPOB leadership,” the statement noted, adding that its misuse has been exploited to undermine peace and security in parts of the South-East and other areas described by the group as Biafraland.

Of particular concern to the DOS is the alleged use of the “Emma Powerful” name to issue unauthorised directives, including sit-at-home and lockdown orders. IPOB leadership categorically denied authorising any sit-at-home action scheduled for Monday, 2 February 2026, stressing that such announcements did not originate from the Directorate of State and should be disregarded by the public.

To remove any ambiguity, IPOB stated unequivocally that any future press release issued under the “Emma Powerful” name does not represent the official position of the organisation and should not be attributed to its leadership. The DOS emphasised that this clarification is necessary to protect both supporters and the general public from misinformation.

The move reflects an effort by IPOB to consolidate internal authority and project a more formal organisational structure, particularly amid heightened scrutiny from security agencies and the international community. By insisting on letterheaded communications, the group aims to establish a verifiable chain of responsibility for its public statements.

Observers note that the decision also underscores ongoing internal tensions and challenges within separatist movements, where splinter groups, impersonators, and rival factions often exploit communication gaps to advance conflicting agendas. In IPOB’s case, the leadership appears intent on distancing itself from actions that could escalate insecurity or economic disruption in the South-East.

Reactions to the announcement have been mixed. Some supporters welcomed the decision as a long-overdue step toward clarity and accountability, arguing that a recognised spokesperson should speak clearly and consistently for the organisation. Others, however, viewed the development as evidence of internal divisions and leadership struggles within the movement.

The DOS, however, maintained that the decision was not driven by factional disputes but by the need to protect IPOB’s credibility and the welfare of the communities affected by unauthorised actions carried out in its name.

As Nigeria continues to grapple with security and political challenges in the South-East, IPOB’s decision to discontinue the “Emma Powerful” pseudonym may signal an attempt to recalibrate its public image and reduce the impact of misinformation. Whether the move will successfully restore trust and discipline within the movement remains to be seen.

What is clear, however, is that IPOB leadership has drawn a firm line: only communications issued directly and verifiably by its Directorate of State now carry the authority of the organisation.
