Denton was born in Nashville, Tennessee, in the United States on January 20, 1963. The second of three children of J.T. Denton and Mary Jean Woolslair Denton, he was raised in nearby Goodlettsville along with his siblings.
His father who was a dentist and had served in the military, passed away in 1993, while his mother followed suit in 2002 from complications of breast cancer.
His parents raised him a Southern Baptist, and he grew up to become a Minister of Music at the Westmoreland United Methodist Church in Tennessee.
He experienced his secondary education at Goodlettsville High School before proceeding to the University of Tennessee where he majored in Television/Journalism, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in advertising. Before switching his career options to acting, Denton sold advertising for several radio stations.
He started acting at a community theater in Nashville when he was 23 years old and later moved to California to pursue acting as a profession. In the early days of his acting career, he was sometimes listed in the credits as Jamie Denton.
While living in Chicago, James Denton’s first role was in the film “A Streetcar Named Desire”, and his last was in the French farce, “Lapin Lapin” in which he acted as the terrorist “Bebert”. After the Desperate Housewives series ended, Denton moved with his family to Chanhassen, Minnesota where they presently reside.
