His parents were both employed, with his mother working as a clerk for city government while his father worked as a home builder. The family moved to Huntsville, Alabama, in 1958, and John had to experience his childhood days in this new location.

When he was 20 years old, he lost his father. His mother died ten years afterward.

Hendricks is an educated and intelligent man. He started his educational pursuit by joining S.R. Butler High School when he had completed his elementary education. He holds a bachelor’s degree in history, which he earned from the University of Alabama in Huntsville in 1974.

Early Days

Before launching The Discovery Channel, John Hendricks was not inexperienced with things associated with broadcasting and communications. He had served as the president of the American Association of University Consultants, a fund-raising consulting company that he founded. As a private consulting organization, the American Association of University Consultants is primarily involved in television distribution as well as the marketing of educational programs and services. In his tenure as a leader at the organization, Hendricks amassed a large client list, including colleges, universities, and educational film distributors.

Along with his duties at the American Association of University Consultants between 1974 and 1980, Mr. Hendricks occupied the seat of director of corporate relations for the prestigious University of Maryland. Before that, from 1973 to 1974, he served at the University of Alabama in Huntsville as director of community and governmental relations.

When John Hendricks started Discovery in 1982, he added $20,000 of his own money to the initial financing provided by a New York insurance company and an investment bank. To develop the new cable service, Hendricks incorporated his company, then known as the Cable Educational Network Inc.

John Hendricks was initially married to Pattie Miller whom he met while they both attended S.R. Butler High School.

In January 1981, he got married to his current wife, Maureen Donohue. The couple are the parents of two children, Andrew Hendricks and Elizabeth Hendricks.

Andrew attended the Landon School and now serves as the President of Driven Experiences, an automotive company that deals with many forms of the marketing media. He is also a professional race car driver in Grand-Am Road Racing. His sister, Elizabeth, attended the Holton-Arms School and also Princeton University. She currently serves as President of Hendricks Factual Media.
