Kano Anti-Graft Agency Recovers Government Vehicles From Kwankwaso’s Son, Four Former Commissioners

The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission has confirmed the recovery of multiple government vehicles from five former top officials of the state government, including Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, son of former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. The recovery followed allegations that the officials refused to return government vehicles after voluntarily resigning their appointments.

The chairman of the anti-graft agency, Sa’idu Yahaya, confirmed the development in a telephone interview, explaining that the operation was carried out after all administrative efforts to retrieve the vehicles failed. According to him, the recovered vehicles were traced to former commissioners who exited government following political realignments within the state.

Those affected include the former Commissioner for Security, Air Vice Marshal Ibrahim Umar (rtd); former Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso; former Commissioner for Science and Technology, Yusuf Ibrahim Kofar Mata; former Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Adams Aliyu Kibiya; and Nasiru Sani Garo, former Commissioner for Special Projects.

Yahaya disclosed that the Office of the Secretary to the Kano State Government had earlier issued formal letters directing the former officials to return all government assets in their possession. However, he said the directive was ignored, leaving the commission with no option but to physically recover the vehicles in line with its statutory mandate.

“Government assets are not personal property,” Yahaya stated. “Once an official leaves office, all government vehicles and assets under their custody must be returned immediately. We exhausted all administrative channels before enforcing compliance.”

The development comes amid heightened political tension in Kano State, especially following recent political realignments involving Governor Abba Yusuf and the ruling All Progressives Congress. Supporters of the government have praised the recovery exercise as a sign of renewed commitment to accountability, while critics have described it as politically motivated and targeted at individuals perceived to be out of favour with the current power structure.

The controversy intensified after reports emerged that Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso and some of the affected former officials had approached the court to challenge the recovery of the vehicles, arguing that the action was unlawful. This legal move further fueled public debate, with many Nigerians questioning why official vehicles would remain in private custody long after officials had left office.

Reacting to the criticism, Yahaya insisted that the commission’s actions were neither selective nor politically driven. “This is not about witch-hunting anyone,” he said. “It is about protecting the resources of the people of Kano State. Public trust depends on transparency and accountability, and we will act against anyone found unlawfully holding government property.”

Public reactions have been sharply divided. While some residents argue that the law must apply equally to all, regardless of political affiliation or family background, others believe the timing of the enforcement raises questions about fairness and consistency. Analysts note that asset recovery efforts often become flashpoints in Nigeria’s charged political environment, especially when they involve prominent political families.

As the debate continues, observers say the incident underscores the broader challenge of public asset management and accountability in Nigeria. Whether the courts will uphold the actions of the Kano anti-graft agency or side with the former officials remains to be seen, but the case has already reignited discussions about ethics, entitlement, and the responsibilities of public office holders.
