Kumar Birla is an Indian Businessman and the chairman of the multinational, Aditya Birla Group— known to be the third largest business house in the whole of India. Born into a business family, he was raised to become a successful entrepreneur, and eventually got involved in the family business. After obtaining his degree and becoming a Chartered Accountant, Birla completed his post-graduation from London. Following the shocking demise of his father, Kumar Birla, 28 at that time, was saddled with the responsibility of taking care of the family business as well as the family. He faced a lot of doubts regarding his lack of experience because by the time he took over the Aditya Birla Group, it was already a giant business enterprise, dealing in viscose, garments, cement, textiles, aluminum and fertilizers. Kumar Mangalam Birla was born into a Marwari business family on June 14, 1967. His parents were Aditya Vikram Birla and Rajashri Birla. He has a sister named Vasavadatta Birla. He spent most of his childhood in Kolkata and Mumbai, and was raised in a high-pressure environment which constantly reminded him of his family name, fortune, and the responsibility attached with it.

After completing his school education, he attended the University of Bombay and graduated with a B.Com degree. He then attended the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India and graduated as a Chartered Accountant, before attending London Business School, London, United Kingdom where he completed his MBA.

Kumar Birla’s Career

Following the passing of his father in 1995, Kumar took over as the Chairman of Aditya Birla Group of Companies. Some suspicions were raised concerning his abilities to handle such a big organization due to his lack of experience but he proved his cynics wrong. He consolidated the position of the company in existing businesses and further expanded to BPO, Telecom, Software, and other areas. He is currently the Chairman of the $40 billion multinational company with operations spanning across over 40 different countries across six continents.

Kumar was appointed as Chairman of the Board of Trade by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry. He also served as the Chairman of the Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Company Affairs. He was made Chairman of SEBI’s Committee on Insider Trading, and also became the Chairman of Securities and Exchange Board of India’s (SEBI) Committee on Corporate Governance.

He is a former Director of the Central Board of Directors at the Reserve Bank of India. He also became a member of Asian Regional Advisory Board of London Business School, and has been inducted on the Advisory Board of The Economic Times Corporate.

He is a member of the Advisory Council for the Centre for Corporate Governance, Apex Advisory Council of the Associated Chambers of Commerce, and National Council of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

Kumar Birla was named ‘Business Man of the Year’ by Business India and ‘The Business Leader of the Year’ by The Economic Times in 2005. He was honoured with ‘The Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year-India’ Award in 2005. In 2007, he was named Outlook business magazine’s ‘Most Socially Responsible Leader’ and NDTV’s ‘Global Indian Leader of the Year’.

In 2008, the Amity International Business School presented him ‘The Corporate Role Model Award’ and AIMA honoured him with the ‘JRD Tata Corporate Leadership Award’. In 2009, the Bombay Management Association presented him the ‘Entrepreneur of the Decade Award’. In 2010, he was named ‘CNN-IBN Indian of the Year– Business’. The All India Management Association also named him the ‘Business Leader of the Year’ in the same year.

He has earned the honor of being the Bombay Management Association’s “The Management Man of the Year”, NITIE’s “Business Visionary”, and the World Economic Forum’s “Young Global Leader”.

The Banaras Hindu University has awarded him the D. Litt (Honoris Causa) Degree. He also received The Honorary Doctorate of Science (Honoris Causa) from the G. D. Pant University of Agriculture & Technology, Pantnagar.
