LAWMA Arrests Two Individuals for Illegal Waste Dumping Along Igando–Egan Road

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has arrested two individuals for illegal waste dumping along the Igando–Egan Road axis, reinforcing the state government’s renewed commitment to environmental sanitation, public health, and strict enforcement of waste management laws across Lagos State.

The suspects, identified as Igwe Chisom and Awo Uchenna, both reportedly from Ebonyi State, were apprehended on Wednesday, February 5, 2026, at about 10:00 a.m. The arrest took place near Egan Primary School, where the men were allegedly caught in the act of indiscriminately dumping refuse in a public space, in clear violation of Lagos State environmental regulations.

According to LAWMA officials, the arrest followed routine monitoring and surveillance carried out by enforcement officers as part of ongoing efforts to curb illegal waste disposal, which has continued to pose serious environmental and health risks across several parts of the metropolis. The authority noted that the suspects were apprehended promptly after they offloaded refuse at the location, which is not designated as an approved waste collection or transfer point.

Illegal dumping of refuse remains a major challenge in Lagos, particularly along roadsides, drainage channels, school premises, and other public spaces. Such acts not only degrade the environment but also contribute to flooding, air and water pollution, and the spread of communicable diseases. LAWMA has repeatedly warned residents and visitors alike that indiscriminate waste disposal is a punishable offence under existing environmental laws.

LAWMA has also reiterated that Lagos State provides multiple lawful avenues for waste disposal, including registered Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators, approved collection points, and scheduled waste evacuation services. Residents are expected to patronize these services rather than resort to unlawful dumping, which undermines the collective effort to keep the city clean and safe.

However, the incident has also sparked wider public discussion about waste management infrastructure, enforcement consistency, and public awareness. LAWMA officials stressed that enforcement actions are not targeted at any particular group but are applied uniformly to anyone found violating sanitation regulations.
