After serving in the Navy during the Second World War II, he attended and graduated from Ole Miss, and then served again in the Navy during the Korean conflict.
After that, he returned to his hometown of Jackson, Mississippi, with the primary intention of entering the booming oil business.
With the support of his wife, the former Dorothy Lee Crum, Lampton embarked on a business career spanning over sixty years that would see him at the wheel of Ergon, a diversified and established conglomerate that provides jobs to thousands of employees in Mississippi, 29 other states, and in several other countries.
While other businesses were packing up and moving to Texas during the oil boom years, Mr. Leslie remained committed to his home state of Mississippi and remained there with his businesses.

He was predeceased by his parents, Jinx Anastasia Porcine Lampton and Leslie Lampton Sr., his sister Jennie Dehmer, and his niece Diane Dehmer Dinkins.
His survivors included his loving wife Dorothy Lee Crum Lampton, their four sons, Leslie B. Lampton III, Robert H. Lampton, Lee Crum Lampton, William W. Lampton (Bill), their spouses, 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and a nephew Joe T. Dehmer Jr.
