Morrison was born on 28 October 1978 in Fort Ord, California, in the United States. He is the son of Thomas Morrison and his wife Mary Louise and was raised in Chico, California.

He was part of the Orange County High School of Arts and Collaborative Arts Project 21 (CAP21) while at Los Alamitos High School campus. While in high school, he did a musical with American actress Jodie Sweetin.

After high school, he enrolled in New York University’s Tisch School of Arts and dropped out after two years, and joined the Broadway adaptation of “Footloose”.

He had his big break when he got the role of Link Larkin in the Broadway version of John Waters’ “Hairspray”. After performing the role for some time, he began to work on television, guest-starring on shows like “Hack”, “Numbers”, “Ghost Whisperer”, and “CSI: Miami”.

He also played a part in films such as “Simply Funk”, “Primary Colors”, “Marci X”, and “Music and Lyrics”.

Having garnered more experience, he followed up these performances by playing the role of Sir Harry in the ABC-TV production of “Once Upon a Mattress”, starring film stars like Zooey Deschanel, Tracey Ullman, and Carol Burnett.

He starred in the cast of the musical “Hairspray” from its opening in 2002 through January 2004.

In 2005 he switched lanes, starring as Fabrizio Nacarelli in “The Light in the Piazza”, and his performance made sure he was nominated for a Tony Award.

He left the show in August 2005. In October 2006, he became Adam Munson as he joined the cast of the CBS soap opera, “As the World Turns”. However, he left the show soon after due to a conflict in scheduling.

Matthew Morrison then appeared in a benefit performance in celebration of Andrew Lippa, and another Anniversary of the performing group ”The Kids in the Hall”, at Orange County Performing Arts Center in California in December 2006.
