NAF Officer Akinuli Clinches Double Honours at West African Surgeons’ Conference
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has celebrated one of its senior officers, Group Captain A.O. Akinuli, for earning two prestigious awards at the West African College of Surgeons (WACS) Scientific Conference held in Accra, Ghana.
In an official statement shared via its X (formerly Twitter) handle, the Air Force described the achievement as a testament to its commitment to professional excellence and advanced human capacity development. The conference, which took place from February 8 to 12, 2026, was organised under the Faculty of Dental Surgery of WACS.
Group Captain Akinuli, a specialist in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery trained with the support of the Nigerian Air Force, distinguished himself during the 2025 Fellowship Examinations. His performance earned him two major recognitions:
-
The Prof Olayinka Otuyemi Prize for Best Dissertation Candidate in the 2025 Fellowship Examinations at first attempt.
-
The Prof Emmanuel Oladapo-Adekeye Prize for the Best Dissertation in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
According to the NAF, the accomplishment reflects its deliberate investment in continuous training, scholarship, and advanced medical specialization. The Service linked Akinuli’s success to the leadership philosophy of the Chief of the Air Staff, Sunday Kelvin Aneke, which emphasizes competence, lifelong learning, and mission-oriented professionalism.
The Air Force stressed that the achievement goes beyond personal recognition, projecting the institution as one that nurtures innovation and produces world-class personnel. While primarily known for its national security responsibilities, NAF highlighted that its officers also contribute meaningfully to other sectors, including medicine and regional academic advancement.
Online reactions to the news were largely congratulatory, with many Nigerians praising the officer’s excellence despite the demanding nature of military service. Some commentators noted that achievements like this underscore the depth of talent within the country when given the right institutional support.
However, as often seen in Nigeria’s social media space, the celebratory thread also sparked ethnic banter and political undertones, with some users debating the officer’s background and others cautioning against politicizing or tribalizing individual accomplishments.
Despite the side conversations, the dominant tone remained one of pride and commendation. Observers described the recognition at a respected regional body like WACS as a significant milestone, reinforcing Nigeria’s presence in West Africa’s medical and academic community.
Ultimately, Group Captain Akinuli’s double honours serve as a reminder that excellence can thrive within disciplined institutions, and that military service members continue to make notable contributions beyond the battlefield — including in specialized healthcare and academic research.
