Nigerian National Arrested in South Africa Over Drug Haul Valued at ₦34 Million

South African authorities have arrested a Nigerian national in Pretoria North after allegedly discovering illegal drugs worth about ₦34 million (approximately R400,000) during a routine law enforcement operation. The arrest, which occurred on January 17, 2026, has once again drawn attention to cross-border drug trafficking concerns and the activities of foreign nationals involved in criminal networks within South Africa.

According to official reports, officers of the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) were conducting a drunk-driving operation in Pretoria North when they stopped a silver Volkswagen Polo. The vehicle reportedly had only one occupant, who was later identified as a Nigerian citizen. During the stop, officers carried out a standard inspection, which led to a more thorough search of the vehicle.

The search allegedly uncovered several suspected illegal narcotic substances concealed in different parts of the car. Police said drugs were found in the glove compartment, under the seat, and in plain sight inside the steering wheel storage compartment, raising immediate suspicion of drug trafficking rather than personal use.

Items seized during the operation included two transparent bags of dagga, seven rolled dagga joints, one CAT block, one nyaope block, and eight foreign illegal medicinal pills. Authorities estimated the total street value of the seized substances at R400,000, translating to roughly ₦34 million based on current exchange rates.

Following the discovery, the suspect was arrested on the spot and taken into police custody, where he was detained at a local police station pending further investigation. South African law enforcement officials confirmed that the case would be transferred to the appropriate investigative units for prosecution, with charges expected to include possession of illegal drugs and dealing in narcotics.
