Panic Grips Auchi as Multiple Explosions Rock Edo Community

Residents of Auchi, the administrative headquarters of Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State, were thrown into panic on Wednesday evening following multiple explosions that occurred in different parts of the town. The loud blasts, which were heard almost simultaneously, triggered widespread fear, confusion, and speculation before security agencies moved in to contain the situation.

According to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the explosions occurred at about 6:30 p.m. in at least three separate locations across Auchi. The first blast was reported along Igbei Road, while the second occurred at the Igbo Shade area near an AP filling station. A third explosion followed shortly after along the Auchi–Okene Road, close to Winners Junction. The spread of the incidents across different locations heightened fears among residents, many of whom initially suspected a coordinated attack.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as residents fled their homes and shops, fearing further explosions. Several buildings, shops, and roadside structures were damaged in the affected areas, with property losses estimated to run into millions of naira. As of the time of filing the report, no official figures had been released regarding casualties, and authorities said the extent of injuries or fatalities, if any, was still being assessed.

An eyewitness who spoke to NAN on condition of anonymity said the explosions appeared to have occurred almost at the same time, giving the impression of a planned or coordinated incident. The source urged security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation, stressing that residents deserved clarity on what caused the explosions in order to prevent a recurrence and restore public confidence.

The uncertainty surrounding the cause of the explosions fuelled intense anxiety within the community, particularly against the backdrop of rising insecurity across parts of the country. Social media platforms and online forums were quickly flooded with speculation, ranging from terrorism to sabotage, while others accused authorities of withholding information.

However, security sources later offered a different explanation. According to a credible source at the Auchi Divisional Police Station, the explosions were linked to a fuel tanker accident along the expressway. The source said the tanker had fallen and spilled petrol, which flowed into drainage channels running through parts of the town. Vapours from the spilled fuel reportedly accumulated in the drains and later ignited at different points, resulting in explosions at multiple locations.

The source explained that this chain reaction created the impression of separate, coordinated blasts, even though they originated from the same incident. Police and other security agencies swiftly cordoned off the affected areas to prevent residents from approaching the sites, particularly as crowds began gathering to scoop fuel from the fallen tanker—an act that has previously led to deadly infernos in similar incidents across the country.

The Police Area Commander in Auchi was said to have personally intervened by mobilising officers to disperse the crowd and secure the scene, preventing what could have turned into a far more devastating disaster. Authorities warned residents of the extreme dangers associated with fuel scooping and urged the public to cooperate with emergency responders during such incidents.

Despite the clarification, the incident has raised broader concerns about emergency response systems, public safety awareness, and the spread of misinformation during crises. Some residents questioned how spilled fuel could trigger explosions at different locations, while others blamed poor urban drainage systems and weak enforcement of safety regulations.

As investigations continue, security agencies have assured residents that there is no evidence of a terrorist attack and that normalcy has largely returned to the affected areas. They also reiterated the need for calm, urging the public to rely on verified information from official sources rather than speculation.

The Auchi explosions serve as a stark reminder of how quickly accidents can escalate into major emergencies, especially in densely populated towns. They also underscore the urgent need for improved road safety, better fuel transportation regulations, and sustained public education on the dangers of fuel scooping—particularly during the festive season when travel and fuel movement increase significantly.

For many residents, the night’s events were a frightening experience. But for authorities, it is yet another warning that disaster prevention, transparency, and rapid communication are as important as emergency response itself.
