His mother, Helen, was a homemaker who was one of the first set of women to graduate from Baruch College. His father, Samuel, was a wholesale health food distributor who formerly served in the military.

His family is of Romanian Jewish descent. He has three sisters, attended the East Side Hebrew Institute, and later graduated from Stuyvesant High School before attending Binghamton University from which he earned his bachelor’s degree in music (piano, composition).

After polishing his skills as a stand-up comedian following a recently found interest in comedy as a college boy, Paul had a breakout film role in the year 1982 when he appeared in the coming-of-age film “Diner”, and his performance in that very project effectively brought his abilities to the attention of Hollywood. He amplified this success by acting as a detective in the 1984 film “Beverly Hills Cop”. He also had roles in “Beverly Hills Cop II” in 1987, “Aliens” in 1986, “The Marrying Man” in 1991, and “Bye Bye Love” in 1995.
