PDP Slams Fintiri’s Defection to APC as “Cowardice,” Warns of Threat to Multi-Party Democracy

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reacted sharply to the defection of Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), labeling the move as unprincipled, morally questionable, and damaging to Nigeria’s democratic culture.

In a statement issued on Friday in Abuja, the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, accused the governor of abandoning political ideals for personal convenience. According to the party, Fintiri’s decision represents a failure of character rather than a legitimate political strategy.

Ememobong stated that the PDP had provided Fintiri with a political platform and electoral support across several election cycles, enabling him to rise and remain relevant within Nigeria’s political landscape. He argued that leaving such a platform at the “first sign of discomfort” amounted to what the party described as “an exhibition of unrestrained cowardice.”

The PDP further noted that the defection had long been the subject of speculation but was repeatedly denied by the governor himself, even as recently as last week following a presidential visit to Adamawa State. This, the party said, made the eventual move appear deceptive and insincere.

While acknowledging that Nigeria’s constitution guarantees freedom of association and that Fintiri acted within his legal rights, the PDP stressed that legality does not automatically equate to moral correctness. The party insisted that political actors should be guided not only by law but also by principles, consistency, and loyalty to the electorate who voted them into office under a specific party platform.

“For a person to abandon a platform that provided political coverage for him across many election cycles at the sight of slight discomfort is not the mark of a principled politician,” the statement reiterated. “History and posterity remain the ultimate judges of human conduct.”

The PDP also expressed concern over the broader implications of frequent defections by elected officials, warning that such actions weaken opposition parties and undermine the essence of multi-party democracy. According to the party, democracy thrives on strong institutions and ideological competition, not on opportunistic realignments driven by power calculations.

Despite the strong language, the party called on its members and supporters in Adamawa State to remain calm and accept the development with grace. Ememobong urged party loyalists to stay focused, emphasizing that moments of political adversity often reveal the true character of individuals and institutions.

“The true test of a person is not during times of comfort, but during moments of inconvenience and contention,” the PDP spokesman said, encouraging party members to see the defection as an opportunity for renewal rather than despair.

Reactions to the PDP’s statement have been mixed across political circles and social media. While some observers agree that frequent defections erode ideological politics, others argue that political realignment is a long-standing feature of Nigeria’s political system and should not be moralized. Critics of the PDP’s position have questioned whether the party has effectively addressed internal divisions that have driven prominent members away.

As Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 general elections, Fintiri’s defection is widely seen as part of a larger realignment reshaping the country’s political landscape. Whether this trend strengthens the ruling party or galvanizes opposition forces remains to be seen, but analysts agree that the consequences will extend far beyond Adamawa State.
