Peter Obi Presidency: Yunusa Tanko Declares a Collective Nigerian Project Amid Controversy and Political Crosscurrents
Dr. Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, has reaffirmed that the aspiration of Mr. Peter Obi to become President of Nigeria is not a sectional agenda or a personal ambition driven by narrow interests, but a collective national project owned by Nigerians across regions, generations, and political persuasions. In a detailed press statement released on January 3, 2026, the Obidient Movement sought to address what it described as deliberate misrepresentations, malicious propaganda, and distortions arising from recent public commentary and interviews involving its leadership.
According to the statement, the Obidient Movement is an organic, nationwide, and values-driven democratic platform committed to good governance, accountability, transparency, and strict adherence to the rule of law. It stresses that the movement did not emerge as a conventional political structure tied permanently to any single party, but as a civic-driven force mobilised around the urgent need for credible leadership and national renewal. Its overriding goal, the group insists, is the emergence of the right leadership for Nigeria through lawful, democratic, and peaceful means.
In clear and unequivocal terms, the Movement declared that its collective energy, resolve, and organisational strength remain fully committed to the presidential ambition of Mr. Peter Obi. While acknowledging that the Obidient Movement may operate within any political party platform that aligns with Obi’s principles, leadership vision, and reformist agenda, it emphasised that its loyalty is not to party labels but to values and national interest. The statement underlined that Peter Obi stands out among Nigeria’s frontline political figures in terms of competence, integrity, fiscal discipline, compassion, economic expertise, democratic credentials, and international credibility, reinforced by what the Movement described as a consistent record of prudent leadership.
Dr. Tanko further asserted that this confidence in Peter Obi is not limited to Obidient supporters alone, but is widely shared by millions of Nigerians across all geopolitical zones, age groups, and ideological backgrounds. For this reason, the Movement strongly rejected speculation that it could support Obi as a vice-presidential candidate under any arrangement. It categorically stated that the Obidient Movement is mobilised exclusively for Peter Obi’s emergence as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and nothing less.
On the issue of party politics, the statement clarified that the Movement is currently supporting Peter Obi within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as he seeks its presidential ticket. It pledged to respect the outcome of the process, provided it is transparent, credible, and fair. However, it also warned that if the process is compromised, the Movement will take a united and lawful decision consistent with its principles. Crucially, it stressed that wherever Peter Obi, acting within the law and guided by conscience, chooses to pursue his presidential mandate, the Obidient Movement will follow. Its allegiance, the statement reiterated, is to Obi’s leadership vision and Nigeria’s national redemption, not to political convenience or compromised platforms.
While reaffirming its commitment to peaceful democratic engagement, the Obidient Movement warned that it would never sacrifice its principles or dilute its demand for credible leadership for the sake of expediency. It noted that the Movement has already endured sacrifices, resistance, misinformation, and coordinated attacks because of its belief in a better Nigeria, and vowed not to be distracted or intimidated by media manipulation or partisan smear campaigns.
As political debates rage online and offline, with supporters and critics trading sharp words about Obi’s ideology, alliances, and chances, the Movement positioned itself as focused and resolute. It concluded by calling on Nigerians to remain united, vigilant, and committed to the collective task of rescuing the country from poor governance. In the view of the Obidient Movement, a Peter Obi presidency represents one of the clearest paths toward national renewal, economic recovery, and accountable governance—proof, it says, that a new Nigeria is not only necessary, but possible.
