Ratan Tata is an Indian businessman and industrialist. He is an ex-Chairman of the largest Indian group of businesses, Tata Group of Companies.

He is the current Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons, the father company of the Tata Group which is in control of several major companies including Tata Teleservices, Tata Steel, Indian Hotels, Tata Motors, Tata Consultancy Services, and Tata Power.

He was born in Surat, India on 28 December 1937, to Naval Tata and his beloved wife Sonoo. His father, Naval Tata was an adopted son of Ratanji Tata, the younger son of Jamsetji Tata.

Jamsetji Tata founded the Tata Group of Companies in 1868. Ratan Tata has a step-brother, Noel Tatan, and a brother Jimmy.

Ratan was just 10 when his parents divorced so he and his brother were raised by Navajbai Tata their grandma. He joined Campion School, Mumbai for his early education and completed his schooling at Cathedral and John Connon School.

He earned a B.S in Architecture & Structural Engineering in 1962 from Cornell University, United States, and in 1975, he completed an Advanced Management Program at the Harvard Business School.

Ratan Tata’s Career

After his graduation in 1962, Ratan Tata joined Tata Steel as a worker before deciding to attend Harvard Business School for a management program. When Nelco was experiencing struggles, he was chosen as the company’s Director in 1971.

Though it was a time of difficulty and economic recession, he did his best before moving on to become chairman of Tata Group in 1991.

Known as the “dreamer of cars”, Ratan Tata’s regime as chairman saw to the acquisition of several car companies when they were falling, including brands such as Jaguar and Land Rover, and led them to attain new heights.

Ratan Tata is a member of the Indian Prime Minister Minister’s Council on Trade and Industry. He is also a board member of leading international companies like Booze Allen Hamilton, the Mitsubishi Cooperation, and JP Morgan Chase.
