Richard Morgan Fliehr was born as Fred Phillips in Memphis Tennessee, United States on 25 February 1949. He is the son of Luther and Olive Philips. He was adopted during his childhood and went to Wayland Academy in Wisconsin.

Flair made his wrestling debut in the year 1972 when he was 23 years old. In 1973, he contested in the International Wrestling Enterprise. He went on several tours for AJPW (All Japan Pro Wrestling). In the 1980s, he became the winner of the NWA World Heavyweight Championship, and successfully defended it on many occasions.

He then became the first World Championship Wrestling (WCW) Champion and was also the NWA World Heavyweight Champion. In 1991, he joined the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE, then WWF). Despite that, he still did tours for Super World of Sports promotion.
