He was born Robert Kelly Thomas in Landstuhl, West Germany on February 14, 1972. His father, Bill, was a United States Army sergeant. On the other hand, his mother, Mamie, was an alcoholic who hit him from time to time. When Rob was 12 years old, she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma and was given six months to live. Young Rob was alone with his mom after his half-sister, Melissa, from his mom’s prior marriage, left home to get married. His mom went into remission and wasted no time in resuming drinking heavily.

When he was six months old, his father and the family moved back to the United States and his parents ended their marriage when Rob was two and he lived with his mom and sister (before her marriage). They were poor and had to move frequently in search of favorable conditions. They often lived in South Carolina in Rob’s grandmother’s house. His grandmother managed a small country store and gas station where she also sold moonshine and marijuana.
