After years of struggling through a really tough childhood, Rob Thomas found his path and worked towards achieving greatness to the extent he reached the level where he is in the music business today. More details follow below.
Early Life: Childhood, Education
He was born Robert Kelly Thomas in Landstuhl, West Germany on February 14, 1972. His father, Bill, was a United States Army sergeant. On the other hand, his mother, Mamie, was an alcoholic who hit him from time to time. When Rob was 12 years old, she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma and was given six months to live. Young Rob was alone with his mom after his half-sister, Melissa, from his mom’s prior marriage, left home to get married. His mom went into remission and wasted no time in resuming drinking heavily.
When he was six months old, his father and the family moved back to the United States and his parents ended their marriage when Rob was two and he lived with his mom and sister (before her marriage). They were poor and had to move frequently in search of favorable conditions. They often lived in South Carolina in Rob’s grandmother’s house. His grandmother managed a small country store and gas station where she also sold moonshine and marijuana.
Thomas was in middle school when he tried marijuana for the first time. He grew up listening to country music and loved the lyrics of hard lives sand about by singers like Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard.
When he was 10, Thomas and his family moved to Sarasota in Florida and stayed there for a year before settling in Orlando. He attended Lake Brantley High School where he joined the school choir. He left the school before graduating but later earned his GED. During this period of his Thomas’, he was mostly homeless, hitchhiking around the southeast and crashing on friends’ couches.
He spent two months in jail for stealing a car. After he got out, he started writing songs and joined a number of cover bands.
Professional Life: Music Career
In 1993, Thomas and others like John Goff, Paul Doucette, Jay Stanley, and Brian Yale started the band Tabita’s Secret. Their band grew popular in the Orlando area, where they played in bars and nightclubs. Thomas was the writer of most of the band’s songs. The band separated after meeting a record manager and Thomas was bereft, thinking that he would never get another chance of securing a recording contract. However, Thomas, Yale, and Doucette still wanted to make music together, so they formed Matchbox 20 with the addition of guitarists Kyle Cook and Adam Gaynor.

In 1996, they released their first song “Push” and it was a hit that eventually set the Matchbox 20 band on its way. Their debut record “Yourself or Someone Like You” went twelve times platinum in the United States. Thomas and Carlos Santana wrote the “Smooth” in 1999 and the hit song took home three Grammy Awards including Song of the Year.
In 2000, Thomas and his Matchbox 20 band released their second album “Mad Season.” After years of this project’s success, Thomas released a second solo album, “Cradlesong”, in 2009. Matchbox 20 released “North” in the fall of 2012 as their third album which came ten years after the band’s last full album of songs. In 2015, Thomas dropped a third solo album “The Great Unknown” and his fourth solo album “Chip Tooth Smile” was released four years later.
His activities in the music scene aside, Thomas has also been seen on TV where he has made guest appearances on shows and series like “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and “Real Time with Bill Maher”. He has also lent his songwriting talents to artists like Daughtry, Pat Green, Taylor Hicks, Travis Tritt, Marc Anthony, Willie Nelson, Mick Jagger, and Tom Petty.
