Robin Yanhong Li is a successful software engineer and internet entrepreneur from China. He is best known for being the co-founder, chairman, and chief executive officer of the website Baidu Inc., well-known in China as the Chinese-language equivalent of Google.

He was born Robin Li Yanhong on 17 November 1968 in Yangquan, Shanxi Province, China. Both of his parents worked in a production factory and were able to cater to the needs of their five children through their jobs.

He attended Peking University where he studied information management before attending the University of Buffalo in the United States for a Ph.D. in computer science. He decided not to continue with his doctorate studies and left the institution with a master’s degree in 1994.

Immediately after completing his studies at the University of Buffalo, Robin joined IDD Information Services, a division of Dow Jones and Company in New Jersey, where he helped develop software for the online version of The Wall Street Journal.

He contributed to improving algorithms for search engines as well, maintaining his job at IDD Information Services from 1994 to 1997. In 1996, while at IDD, he created RankDex, a web search engine with site-scoring and page-ranking algorithms.
