Stevie Nicks Early Life

Stephenie “Stevie” Nicks was born in Phoenix Arizona on May 26, 1948. Her father Jess Nicks married her mother Barbara in 1947 after graduating from college where they met.

She had her first guitar – a handcrafted guitar – from her grandfather, Aaron Nicks at a very young age, and learned from him, popular selections from the country music cannon. Her family frequently moved around, skipping through Texas, New Mexico, Utah, Arizona, and California.

The family landed on the outskirts of Los Angeles by 1963, and Stevie registered at Arcadia High School. While in high school, Stevie Nicks met Robin who later became her best friend.

She joined the band Changing Times, but her time with the group was short-lived as her family soon moved to California, where Stevie enrolled in Menlo Atherton High School. Here, she met Lindsey Buckingham, a fellow songwriter, and guitarist.

A few weeks later, guitarist Bob Welch of Fleetwood Mac while in need of a supporting guitarist remembered the guitar skills from Buckingham’s track and arranged to meet with the musician.

The group asked that Buckingham joins the band but he insisted that Stevie Nicks come on board as well, and a deal was reached. In 1975, the duo of Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham signed on to the band Fleetwood Mac.

Impressively, the newly created music band swiftly recorded an eponymous collection that went straight to No. 1 and sold three million copies. Stevie Nicks’ tracks -particularly Rhiannon and the Landslide- smashed hits, and forged the singer into an overnight sensation.

In 1976, the band began to record their sophomore effort, but their lives were in complete disarray. The rigors of touring and performing had strained Stevie’s voice, and while still trying to keep up with the standard, sought medical help.

The entire Fleetwood Mac band was also at the center of emotional upheaval, with all of its romantic relationships disintegrated as John and Christine McVie of the band decided to divorce, Fleetwood and his wife separated, while Lovebirds Nicks and Buckingham were in the middle of a tumultuous split.

Amidst all the chaos, the band continued to make music together, releasing a second album, Rumours (1977), which was a record-setting hit. The album spent 31 weeks at the #1 spot on the Billboard 200 chart; went platinum in the United States and also the United Kingdom; and earned the Fleetwood Mac group a Grammy Award in 1978 for Album of the Year.

After their collective achievements as a group, Fleetwood Mac had to let Stevie Nicks go solo when she wanted out in 1981.

Addiction & Rehabilitation
