Suzanne Maria Malveaux was born in Lansing, Michigan, United States on December 4, 1966. She was born into a New Orleans -based family to parents whose roots are of Spanish, French, and African descent.

Her mother, Myrna Maria Ruiz, is a retired teacher, while her father, Floyd Joseph Malveaux, was a physician who became Howard University’s College of Medicine’s dean. He was the executive director of Merck Childhood Asthma Network and was also the founder of the National Human Genome Center at Howard University.

Her three siblings include Gregory, Courtney, and her identical twin sister Suzette. Her brother Gregory F. Malveaux is a columnist, an associate professor at Montgomery College, and former Bennett College president.

Furthermore, her sister, Courtney M. Malveaux, is a former assistant attorney general for Virginia State and is the current commissioner of the Virginia Department of Labor. Her twin sister Suzette M. Malveaux is a professor at the Columbus School of Law of the Catholic University of America. She is also a distant cousin of Julianne Malveaux.

While Suzanne was still small, her family lived in New Orleans before later moving to Howard County, in Maryland where she attended Centennial High School in Ellicott. In 1984, she graduated from Centennial High School in Ellicott, Maryland, and joined Harvard College where she graduated with a degree in sociology.

She also attended the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism graduating in 1991 with a master’s degree in broadcasting.

Suzanne Malveaux started her career in television as a general assignment reporter with New England Cable News in Boston, Massachusetts, from 1992 to 1996. She then moved to Washington, D.C. where she joined NBC affiliate WRC-TV as a self-described “rock & roll” reporter reporting local and crime news from 1996 to 1999.

In 1999, Tim Russert, host of ‘Meet The Press’ recruited Suzanne to join NBC News. For the first three years, she reported the news in Washington, including as a Pentagon correspondent, and then in Chicago.
