Tinubu Approves Reconstruction of Key Federal Roads, Expands Bodo–Bonny Link to Boost National Connectivity

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has given approval for the immediate reconstruction of three major federal roads in Niger State, alongside the extension of the strategic Bodo–Bonny Road to connect with the East–West Road in Rivers State.

The approval was granted during a high-level meeting between the president and the Minister of Works, David Umahi, as part of the administration’s broader push to accelerate infrastructure renewal across the country.

According to details of the decision, the three federal roads in Niger State will be reconstructed using reinforced concrete pavement, a design choice aimed at ensuring long-term durability, reduced maintenance costs, and better value for public funds. The roads approved for reconstruction include the Mokwa–Bida Road spanning approximately 120 kilometres, the Mokwa–Makeri Road measuring about 63 kilometres, and the Bida–Labata Road with a total length of roughly 123.5 kilometres.

These routes are considered critical transport corridors linking agricultural communities, commercial hubs, and urban centres within Niger State and beyond. Over the years, poor road conditions along these corridors have posed challenges to farmers, traders, and commuters, leading to increased travel time, higher vehicle maintenance costs, and safety concerns. The planned reconstruction is expected to significantly improve mobility, enhance road safety, and stimulate economic activities along the corridors.

In addition to the Niger State projects, President Tinubu also approved the extension of the Bodo–Bonny Road to directly connect with the East–West Road. The Bodo–Bonny axis has long been regarded as one of the most strategic infrastructure projects in the Niger Delta, given its importance to oil and gas operations, maritime activities, and local livelihoods.

The extension project will be executed as a dual carriageway and constructed with reinforced concrete pavement. It will also feature solar-powered street lighting, reflecting the administration’s emphasis on sustainability, energy efficiency, and modern infrastructure standards. When completed, the extended road is expected to improve access to coastal communities, facilitate the movement of goods and services, and support industrial and economic growth in the region.

Officials familiar with the project noted that linking the Bodo–Bonny Road to the East–West Road will strengthen regional integration within the Niger Delta and reduce logistical bottlenecks that have historically affected the movement of petroleum products, agricultural produce, and other commodities.

The latest approvals align with the Tinubu administration’s stated commitment to prioritising infrastructure as a catalyst for economic growth and national development. Since assuming office, the president has repeatedly emphasised the need for durable road construction methods, transparent project execution, and timely delivery, particularly for projects that have suffered decades of neglect.

Observers say the choice of reinforced concrete pavement for the newly approved projects signals a shift away from short-term fixes toward more sustainable solutions, especially in areas prone to heavy traffic, flooding, and environmental stress. Supporters argue that while the initial costs may be higher, the long-term benefits in terms of reduced maintenance and extended lifespan justify the approach.

As preparations move toward implementation, stakeholders in Niger State and Rivers State have welcomed the approvals, expressing hope that construction work will commence promptly and be completed within schedule. Many residents see the projects as critical steps toward improving living standards, boosting local economies, and enhancing national connectivity.

With these approvals, the federal government has once again placed infrastructure development at the centre of its policy agenda, reinforcing the role of road networks in driving trade, investment, and inclusive growth across Nigeria.
