Tinubu Orders Military Deployment to Kwara Communities Following Deadly Terrorist Attack

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered the immediate deployment of an army battalion to Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State following a deadly attack on the Nuku and Woro communities by suspected terrorists. The directive comes amid growing concern over escalating insecurity in parts of the North-Central region and renewed calls for decisive action against armed extremist groups operating within the country.

According to the Kwara State Government, no fewer than 75 residents were killed during the attack, which occurred on Tuesday. The assault targeted vulnerable rural communities, leaving dozens dead and many others displaced. The scale and brutality of the incident have once again highlighted the persistent security challenges facing Nigeria, particularly in areas that have previously been considered relatively peaceful.

The deployment was confirmed in a statement issued on Wednesday night by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. He said the newly deployed military unit would operate under a special command structure and spearhead an operation codenamed “Operation Savannah Shield.” The objective of the operation, according to the presidency, is to neutralise terrorist elements in the affected areas and prevent further attacks on defenceless communities.

President Tinubu strongly condemned the attack, describing it as “cowardly, beastly, and heartless.” He expressed outrage over the deliberate targeting of civilians and said the perpetrators chose “soft targets” in what he described as a doomed campaign of terror. The president emphasised that such acts of violence would not be tolerated and assured Nigerians that those responsible would be pursued and brought to justice.

In a notable part of the statement, Tinubu acknowledged reports that the affected communities had resisted attempts by the attackers to impose extremist beliefs on them. He commended the residents for rejecting violent indoctrination and for choosing to practise a form of Islam rooted in peace, moderation, and dialogue rather than extremism. The president described their stance as courageous and principled, stressing that religion should never be used as a tool for violence or coercion.

The president also called for stronger coordination between federal and state security agencies, as well as humanitarian institutions, to provide immediate relief to survivors and families affected by the attack. He urged authorities to ensure that displaced residents receive adequate support, including shelter, medical care, and food supplies, while security operations continue in the area.

In addition, President Tinubu extended his condolences to the families of the victims and to the government and people of Kwara State. He prayed for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives and assured the state government of the federal government’s support in restoring peace and stability to the affected communities.

The attack in Kaiama LGA adds to a growing list of violent incidents linked to terrorist and armed groups across Nigeria. While Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) remain active in the North-East, banditry and terrorist-style attacks have increasingly spread into parts of the North-West and North-Central regions, raising concerns about the evolving nature of the security threat.

Security analysts note that the deployment of troops, while necessary in the immediate aftermath of such attacks, must be complemented by proactive intelligence gathering, community engagement, and long-term strategies aimed at dismantling terrorist networks and addressing their sources of funding and recruitment. They argue that without sustained and coordinated efforts, military deployments risk remaining reactive rather than preventive.

The Kwara attack has reignited national debate on Nigeria’s security architecture, with renewed scrutiny on response times, intelligence failures, and the protection of rural communities. As Operation Savannah Shield begins in earnest, expectations are high that the military presence will not only stabilise the affected areas but also deter future attacks and restore public confidence in the government’s ability to protect lives and property.

For now, the focus remains on securing Kaiama and surrounding communities, providing relief to survivors, and ensuring that those behind the massacre are held accountable under the law.
