Tragedy Strikes as Bus Carrying Mourners to Late Bayelsa Deputy Governor’s Burial Crashes, Leaving Multiple Dead

A sombre cloud was cast over Bayelsa State on Thursday following a fatal road accident involving an 18-seater bus conveying mourners to the burial ceremony of the late Deputy Governor of the state, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo. The tragic incident occurred along the Toru-Orua axis of the Sagbama–Ekeremor Road, a major route frequently used by travellers heading into Sagbama Local Government Area.

According to initial reports, the bus was carrying passengers who were travelling to Ofoni, the hometown of the deceased former deputy governor, to attend his burial rites scheduled for January 30, 2026. The crash reportedly resulted in the death of several passengers, with early figures suggesting that more than 10 people may have lost their lives. However, conflicting accounts later emerged, with some sources indicating that the confirmed number of fatalities could be lower. Authorities were yet to issue an official statement at the time of filing this report, leaving the exact casualty figure unclear.

In addition to the fatalities, several other passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries in the accident. Eyewitnesses said the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals, where they are currently receiving emergency medical attention. Medical personnel described some of the injuries as severe, prompting renewed calls for improved emergency response and road safety measures across the state.

The victims were among hundreds of sympathisers travelling from different parts of Bayelsa and neighbouring states to pay their final respects to Senator Ewhrudjakpo, who died suddenly on December 11, 2025. The former deputy governor reportedly collapsed in his office at the Government House in Yenagoa and was later pronounced dead. He was 60 years old.

His death had already plunged the state into mourning, given his prominence in Bayelsa’s political landscape and his long years of public service. In the weeks leading up to his burial, several funeral activities were held in his honour, including a well-attended Day of Tributes that drew prominent political figures and dignitaries. Among those present were former President Goodluck Jonathan, Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, and former Governor Seriake Dickson, underscoring the late deputy governor’s influence and standing within the state and beyond.

The fatal crash has therefore been described by many residents as a “double tragedy,” compounding the grief already being experienced by the people of Bayelsa. What was meant to be a journey of condolence and farewell instead turned into a devastating loss of additional lives, deepening the pain for affected families and the wider community.

While the exact cause of the accident has not yet been officially determined, road users and residents familiar with the Sagbama–Ekeremor Road cited recurring concerns about reckless driving, poor road conditions, and excessive speeding, particularly during large social events such as burials and weddings. Some commentators also pointed to the dangers of fatigue and pressure on drivers transporting large numbers of passengers over long distances within limited timeframes.

Many Nigerians expressed frustration over the frequency of avoidable road accidents, lamenting what they described as weak regulation, poor driver discipline, and inadequate monitoring of commercial and chartered vehicles.
