Uncertainty Over 2027 Ticket as Debate Grows on Tinubu–Shettima Alliance
Uncertainty is reportedly growing within Nigeria’s political circles over whether Kashim Shettima will remain the running mate of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the lead-up to the 2027 presidential election.
According to reports citing insiders within the presidency, discussions are ongoing about possible options regarding the vice-presidential slot, leaving the leadership of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in a difficult position.
Internal Deliberations in Aso Rock
Sources familiar with the situation claim that although there are no public disagreements between the president and the vice president, members of the president’s political camp have reportedly considered the possibility of presenting a different running mate in 2027.
These deliberations are said to have begun more than a year ago, although the exact reasons behind the consideration remain unclear.
Political observers suggest that the debate may involve a combination of strategic political calculations, regional interests, and long-term succession planning.
One source reportedly indicated that retaining Shettima could complicate potential plans for selecting a different successor candidate in 2031, when President Tinubu would be expected to complete a second term if re-elected.
Religious and Regional Balance Debate
Another factor being discussed is the issue of religious balance in Nigeria’s leadership structure.
The 2023 presidential election featured a Muslim-Muslim ticket, with both Tinubu and Shettima being Muslims. While the ticket ultimately won the election, it generated considerable debate across the country.
Some political strategists within the party are said to believe that introducing a Christian running mate in 2027 could help reduce criticism and attract broader national support.
However, party insiders reportedly say the search for a strong Northern Christian political figure capable of mobilizing large voter support has proven difficult.
Possible Alternative Names
Several names have reportedly surfaced in internal discussions as potential alternatives should the party decide to replace the vice president on the ticket.
Among those mentioned is Yakubu Dogara, a former Speaker of the House of Representatives of Nigeria from Bauchi State.
Dogara is a Christian from Northern Nigeria, which some believe could address concerns about religious balance. However, critics argue that his influence within the region may not be strong enough to secure the massive votes typically expected from Northern states.
Another name reportedly being considered is Christopher Musa, Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff. Some observers believe his professional reputation and national profile could make him an acceptable figure across different regions.
Meanwhile, Nentawe Yilwatda, a political figure who has been linked to party leadership discussions, has also been mentioned in political conversations surrounding the vice-presidential slot.
Shettima’s Political Base
Despite these speculations, sources say Vice President Shettima still enjoys considerable support, particularly among the Kanuri political bloc in the North-East region.
His allies reportedly argue that no clear justification has been presented for replacing him, especially since there have been no public conflicts between him and the president.
This support base could make any attempt to remove him from the ticket politically sensitive, as it may create tensions within the party ahead of the primaries.
Political Calculations Ahead of 2027
The debate highlights the complex political calculations that often shape Nigeria’s presidential tickets, where regional representation, religious balance, and electoral strategy all play significant roles.
With the 2027 election cycle still some time away, party leaders appear to be carefully weighing their options while trying to avoid internal divisions.
For now, neither the presidency nor the APC leadership has made any official statement regarding potential changes to the Tinubu–Shettima ticket.
Until a clearer direction emerges, the question of whether the current vice president will remain on the ticket continues to generate speculation within Nigeria’s political landscape.
