Victoria Antoinette Derbyshire was born on 2 October 1968 in Ramsbottom, Lancashire, England to Pauline and Anthony Derbyshire. She has revealed that her father physically abused her, her younger brother and sister, and their mother.

Derbyshire’s mother eventually walked out of the abusive marriage, leaving with the three children. Victoria was 16 when they left their father and she never saw him again.

She studied at the independent Bury Grammar School for Girls before joining the University of Liverpool for a degree in English language and literature.

While at the university, Derbyshire wrote for the student newspaper and also worked with Toxteth Community Radio for some hours every Sunday where she gained work experience.

Afterward, she moved to Preston Polytechnic (now known as the University of Central Lancashire) for a postgraduate diploma course in radio and television journalism.

On Radio

While studying at the University of Liverpool, Derbyshire wrote for the student newspaper and also worked with Toxteth Community Radio for some hours every Sunday, and this helped her gain work experience.

As soon as she had completed her education, she joined BBC Coventry & Warwickshire as a radio reporter and later found a spot at BBC GMR Radio.

In 1998, she switched allegiance to BBC Radio 5 Live, initially deputizing for presenter Jane Garvey on the breakfast show, and eventually became the regular co-presenter alongside Julian Worricker when Garvey left relinquished her spot.

The program, ‘Breakfast Show’,  won a Gold Sony Award in 1998 and another in 2002. When Julian Worricker left the show in January 2003, Derbyshire was joined by Nicky Campbell. In August of the following year, she took over the morning news show after being on maternity leave.
