Worst police operatives are better than criminals, Fubara tells new CP

Rivers state governor, Siminalayi, Fubara

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has expressed that even the least effective police officers are preferable to the most skilled criminals.

During a meeting on Friday at Government House in Port Harcourt with the newly appointed Commissioner of Police, Mustapha Mohammed, who took office two weeks ago, Fubara emphasized that his government holds no ill will toward the Nigeria Police Force, despite certain troubling actions by some officers aimed at destabilizing state governance.

He acknowledged the challenges posed by unprofessional conduct among a minority of police personnel but reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to partnering with the police to ensure the safety and security of Rivers residents.

Fubara stated, “We welcome you with open arms. The worst police officer is still better than the best criminal, so it’s essential that we embrace you as allies. While we may have our differences, our priority must be the security and protection of lives in the state.”

He clarified, “This administration does not have personal grievances against the Nigeria Police Force, particularly the Rivers State Command. Despite past issues, we have consistently supported the police and recognize their crucial role in our community.”

The governor assured ongoing backing for the police to enhance their effectiveness in combating crime. He added, “I want to make it clear that I will never instruct any officer to act unethically. It’s vital to reflect on the morality of your actions, as your professional choices will impact your life after service. You should not live in fear after your tenure because of past wrongdoings.”

Fubara highlighted the importance of professionalism within the police force, noting that the current peace in Rivers State has reduced the need for police intervention. He remarked, “Rivers is a peaceful state. You are back in this role at a time when your presence is needed for the continued safety of our residents. Perform your duties with professionalism, and we will support you.”

He urged the police to actively pursue criminals in their hiding places and emphasized the importance of effective community policing to reduce crime rates. “While we cannot entirely eradicate crime, we can strive to minimize it. We are here to support your strategies in achieving this goal.”

In response, Commissioner of Police Mohammed shared that he has been acclimating to his new role and addressing directives from headquarters. He indicated that his visit aimed to foster cooperation with the governor in ensuring the safety and tranquility of Rivers State for all its inhabitants.
