64th Independence: Ositelu urges FG to address root causes of hunger, poverty, insecurity
Rufus Ositelu, the Primate of the Church of the Lord Worldwide and President of the World Council of Churches in Africa, has urged the government to enhance its investment in agriculture to combat the growing hunger crisis in the nation.
In a message for Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day, Ositelu emphasized the church’s role in contributing to national progress, especially amid recent hunger protests that have highlighted the economic struggles faced by many citizens. He remarked, “The recent protests serve as a stark reminder of the serious economic challenges that plague our society. They are not only cries for assistance but also urgent calls for comprehensive action. We must recognize that these issues stem from deeper economic problems, and I implore all levels of government to address the systemic causes of poverty and hunger.”
He stressed the need for collaboration among government, citizens, the private sector, and civil society to develop sustainable solutions that ensure no one goes to bed hungry. This includes investing in agriculture and mineral resources, creating job opportunities, improving supply chains, and supporting vulnerable populations.
Ositelu also welcomed the recent decision to raise the minimum wage to N70,000, describing it as a positive step given the current economic landscape characterized by inflation and rising living costs. He believes this increase will enhance the quality of life for many and uphold the dignity of work while fostering economic stability.
The cleric, who holds advanced degrees in Computer Science and Religion, called for enhanced security measures to protect citizens, stating, “Security is fundamental to the nation’s future.” He urged the Federal Government to strengthen its security framework and address the underlying factors contributing to violence, advocating for community trust and dialogue as essential elements of a peace strategy.
Ositelu highlighted corruption as a critical barrier to national development, noting that it undermines public trust and diverts resources from essential projects. He called on all Nigerians to support anti-corruption efforts and hold those who engage in corrupt practices accountable. “A transparent and accountable government is vital for our society’s health. It is our shared responsibility to promote integrity and honesty at every level,” he asserted.
Reiterating his views on fiscal federalism, Ositelu stated that its principles and local government autonomy are crucial for effective governance. He praised the current administration’s approval of local government autonomy as a step towards decentralizing power and enhancing local governance, encouraging local leaders to implement these reforms efficiently and accountably.
The cleric also underscored the importance of restructuring, regional governance, and constitutional review for the nation’s future. He concluded by emphasizing the value of prayer, stating it provides strength and guidance in navigating complex issues. “Through prayer, we seek divine wisdom and support. I urge everyone to remain hopeful and turn to God for inspiration, as there will surely be light at the end of the tunnel,” he concluded.
